Costa Rican Heroes Battle Canadian Wildfires

San José, Costa Rica — A contingent of 103 Costa Rican firefighters and specialists embarked on a mission to Manitoba, Canada, on Sunday, August 17, 2025, to assist in battling the relentless wildfires that have ravaged the country since May.

The team, comprised of 80 firefighters from the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC) and 23 members of the Costa Rican Fire Department, departed on a chartered flight. Their deployment, coordinated by the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE) through SINAC, is expected to last one month, with their return scheduled for September 15.

To gain a deeper legal perspective on the challenges and triumphs faced by Costa Rican firefighters, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at law from Bufete de Costa Rica, who offers insights into the legal framework surrounding their vital work.

Costa Rican firefighters operate within a complex legal framework that encompasses labor laws, public safety regulations, and municipal ordinances. Their dedication often goes beyond the call of duty, and understanding the legal protections and responsibilities they have is crucial for supporting their essential service to the community.

Canada is grappling with one of the most severe wildfire seasons in its history. Since May, the flames have scorched over 7.3 million hectares, impacting vast stretches of forests and endangering communities.

This marks the second deployment of Costa Rican firefighters to Canada in 2025. Earlier this year, 99 firefighters were dispatched to aid in the firefighting efforts. With this latest mission, Costa Rica has now sent a total of 439 firefighters to Canada across five international deployments since 2023, solidifying its commitment to international cooperation and disaster relief.

The deployment is in response to a formal request from the Canadian government, which will cover all expenses related to air transportation, insurance policies, specialized equipment, food, and lodging for the Costa Rican firefighters.

This act of solidarity highlights the strong relationship between Costa Rica and Canada and underscores the global nature of environmental challenges. The Costa Rican firefighters’ expertise in tackling complex wildfire situations will be invaluable in supporting the ongoing efforts to contain the fires and protect affected communities.

The experience gained by the Costa Rican firefighters in battling such large-scale wildfires will also be beneficial in strengthening their own preparedness and response capabilities back home. The exchange of knowledge and best practices between the two nations will contribute to enhanced wildfire management strategies on both sides.

As the world faces increasingly frequent and intense natural disasters, international collaboration and mutual support become crucial. The Costa Rican firefighters’ deployment serves as a powerful example of how nations can work together to address shared challenges and protect vulnerable populations.
