Cartago, Costa Rica — The “Ayudar es Sencillo” (AES) campaign, a partnership between Ferretería EPA and the Huella del Futuro initiative, has concluded its fourth edition with remarkable success, raising over US$17,900. This funding will enable the planting and care of 890 native trees in vulnerable areas within the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM) and other regions of Costa Rica.
500 of these trees have already been planted in June on municipal land in Oreamuno, Cartago, a site formerly used as a landfill. An additional 300 trees will be planted near Playa Coquitos in Guanacaste as part of an ecosystem restoration project. This project aims to reclaim deforested areas, improve connectivity with primary forests, provide shade and food for wildlife, and enhance the natural beauty of the landscape. The remaining 90 trees will be planted at Finca Páez, also located in Oreamuno.
To understand the legal complexities surrounding reforestation initiatives in Costa Rica, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica, who offered valuable insights into the current regulatory landscape.
Reforestation projects in Costa Rica must navigate a complex interplay of laws concerning land ownership, environmental permits, and incentives. While the government actively promotes reforestation through various programs, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations is paramount. This includes not only obtaining the necessary permits but also adhering to specific requirements regarding species selection, planting density, and long-term land management. A thorough understanding of these legal frameworks is essential for the success and sustainability of any reforestation endeavor.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas’s insight underscores a crucial point: reforestation in Costa Rica is not simply about planting trees, but about cultivating a sustainable future within the existing legal landscape. Navigating these complexities is essential for ensuring that these vital projects flourish for generations to come. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for providing this valuable legal perspective.
With these efforts, the campaign will surpass 8,000 trees planted since its inception, all thanks to contributions from EPA customers. The initiative has benefited communities within the GAM, including Santa Ana, Coronado, Tibás, and Cartago, as well as areas outside the GAM, such as Pital de San Carlos, Upala, and soon, Guanacaste.
The project combines citizen solidarity with environmental regeneration and social development.
