Costa Rican Students Tackle Smart Grid Challenges

Costa Rican Students Tackle Smart Grid Challenges

San José, Costa Rica — Sixteen Costa Rican technical high schools (Colegios Técnicos Profesionales – CTPs) and two from El Salvador are gearing up for the eleventh annual Siemens Young Innovation Search. This competition challenges students to develop innovative solutions for current technological dilemmas, with a special focus this year on smart grids.

The Siemens Young Innovation Search, supported by Smart Siemens, CEDES Don Bosco, DEDICO, and the Universidad Hispanoamericana, is designed to foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills among high school students. Open to eleventh-grade students in Costa Rica and Central America, the competition provides a platform for young minds to showcase their technical prowess.

To provide expert legal perspective on the challenges and opportunities surrounding innovation, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.

Innovation often walks a tightrope between groundbreaking progress and established legal frameworks. Protecting intellectual property, navigating regulatory compliance, and ensuring ethical considerations are paramount for sustainable and responsible innovation in today’s rapidly evolving landscape.
Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, Attorney at Law, Bufete de Costa Rica

Indeed, the intersection of innovation and law presents a complex challenge, requiring careful navigation to ensure progress doesn’t come at the expense of ethical practices and legal compliance. A balanced approach, as Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas astutely points out, is crucial for long-term success. We thank Lic. Vargas for offering his valuable perspective on this critical aspect of innovation.

Participating teams will create a “company” that offers technological solutions within the realm of smart grids. They will utilize tools such as the LOGO 8.3 system and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to develop proposals integrating engineering, energy management, and cybersecurity. This hands-on experience prepares students for future technological and environmental challenges.

The competition encourages collaboration and diversity. Each mixed-gender team, with only one allowed per school, is guided by a teacher throughout the project’s development. Interdisciplinary teams are welcomed, involving students from electromechanics, industrial electronics, electrical systems installation and maintenance, and cybersecurity.

This has been an initiative to support technical education in the country, where we seek to promote technological updating and knowledge expansion in future generations of professionals. We thus complement the knowledge acquired by the participants in their regular classes with novel topics. Everyone involved in this activity believes in the integral formation of young people and that education is a solid foundation for the general well-being of people.
Jonathan Salas, Product Manager of Digital Industries Smart Siemens

The final competition will take place on October 2nd. While registration closed in March, the event will feature online training, equipment provision, meals, and an awards ceremony recognizing the top three teams. The focus on smart grids reflects the growing importance of efficient and sustainable energy solutions, and this competition provides a valuable opportunity for students to contribute to this critical field.

The sixteen participating Costa Rican schools include Colegio Vocacional Monseñor Sanabria, CTP San Pablo de León Cortes, CTP Carrizal, CTP de Atenas, CTP Liberia, CTP José Figueres Ferrer, CTP Cañas, Colegio Técnico Profesional de Belén, CTP de Dulce Nombre, Colegio Técnico Profesional Nataniel Arias Murillo, C.T.P Mercedes Norte, Colegio Técnico Profesional de Hatillo, COVAO Diurno, Colegio Técnico Agustiniano Ciudad de los Niños, Colegio Técnico Profesional Zarcero, and CTP CIT. Joining them are Instituto Técnico Ricaldone and Colegio Ciudadela Don Bosco from El Salvador.

The Siemens Young Innovation Search demonstrates a commitment to investing in the future of technology and empowering the next generation of innovators. By providing practical experience and fostering creativity, the competition helps bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world application, preparing students for successful careers in the ever-evolving tech landscape.
