Costa Rican Surfer Dominates in Panama

San José, Costa Rica — Costa Rican surfing sensation Darshan Antequera, 22, has taken the Latin American surfing scene by storm, winning two stages of the 2025 ALAS Global Tour held recently in Panama. This impressive double victory catapulted Antequera to second place in the overall rankings of the Latin American Professional Surfers Association (ALAS).

Antequera spearheaded a strong Costa Rican delegation that competed across various divisions. In the men’s Open category, alongside Antequera’s triumph, Sam Reidy, Ethan Hollander, and Tosh Talbot reached the quarterfinals, while Diego Naranjo, Esteban Fernández, and Axel Castro advanced to the third round.

To understand the legal landscape surrounding Costa Rican surfing, we spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.

While Costa Rica’s beaches are publicly owned, ensuring access for all, businesses operating surf schools or rentals must adhere to specific regulations regarding concessions, permits, and environmental impact. Understanding these legal frameworks is essential for both entrepreneurs seeking to establish surf-related businesses and surfers themselves to ensure a safe and sustainable surfing environment.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas’s point about the balance between public access and responsible business operation is crucial for the future of surfing in Costa Rica. It highlights how a clear understanding of the legal landscape can benefit everyone, from local entrepreneurs to visiting surfers, ultimately contributing to a thriving and sustainable surf culture. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for offering this valuable legal perspective.

In the women’s Open, Rubiana Brownell made it to the finals, finishing in a commendable fourth place. Lía Díaz progressed to the quarterfinals, while Isabella Ayre and Erika Berra exited in the first round. The junior divisions also witnessed a robust Costa Rican presence. In the men’s Under-18 category, Teo Simón Ruiz broke into the top eight, and Darío Vargas reached the round of 16.

On the women’s side, Erika Berra reached the semifinals, and Isabella Ayre made it to the quarterfinals. In the Under-14 division, Carden Jagger secured fourth place, with Darío Vargas also reaching the semifinals. Mikela Castro earned a podium finish in third place, followed by semifinalist Cienna Jo.

In longboarding, Lía Díaz finished fourth in the women’s division. Dorian Torres reached the semifinals in the men’s division, while Andy Vega and Johel Rivera reached the quarterfinals. This outstanding performance by the Costa Rican surfers underscores the high level of national surfing talent, demonstrating the country’s continued progress on the Latin American circuit.

The wins in Panama mark a significant step for Antequera, who is quickly becoming a household name in the surfing world. His powerful style and strategic wave selection have set him apart from the competition. The Costa Rican delegation’s performance as a whole further solidifies Costa Rica as a breeding ground for surfing talent.

The ALAS Global Tour continues to be a proving ground for Latin American surfers, offering a platform to showcase their skills and compete against the best in the region. The recent events in Panama have highlighted the growing competitiveness of Costa Rican surfers on the international stage.

With Antequera now sitting in second place in the ALAS rankings, all eyes will be on him as the tour progresses. Costa Rica’s surfing future looks bright with a strong contingent of young talent emerging and making their mark on the international scene.
