In this last world championship, which has been my best participation so far, I managed to place fifth in the Americas and second in Central America and the Caribbean in the solo technical. Without a doubt, it has been the best result I have obtained at a competitive level.
María Paula Alfaro, Artistic Swimmer

Alfaro’s success continued at the PanAm Aquatics Championships in Medellín, where she and her duet partner, Anna Mitinian, achieved a historic milestone. The pair earned a score of 210.982 points in the duet technical routine, setting a new record for both Costa Rica and the Central American region.

It has been a very important achievement to see that all the effort is really paying off and that we are moving forward, without stagnating in the results.

While the accolades and records are a testament to her dedication, Alfaro acknowledges the immense pressure that comes with competing at the elite level. She emphasizes the importance of mental fortitude in a sport where every movement and expression counts.

As our sport is based a lot on presentation, nerves play a very important role and must be worked on a lot in competition. In the end, all our training comes down to two and a half minutes in the water. If a mistake is made in that time, there is no way to correct it.
María Paula Alfaro, Artistic Swimmer

Alfaro understands that rigorous preparation is crucial for facing international competition and holding her own against established powerhouses in the sport. She has been focusing on mindfulness techniques, visualization, and enjoying the process itself, rather than solely fixating on results or external opinions.

I have made a lot of progress in learning to be more present, in enjoying the moment without thinking so much about the results or what others may think. Now I focus more on remembering all the work I have done, on applying visualization techniques and, above all, on really enjoying what I am doing.

Looking ahead, Alfaro is preparing for her first major Olympic cycle, a significant turning point in her career. She is eagerly anticipating the upcoming Central American Games in October, where she will compete for the first time as part of an Olympic cycle, representing Costa Rica on a new stage.

With each competition, Alfaro and her team are paving the way for Costa Rica to establish a prominent presence in the world of artistic swimming. A talented generation of athletes, led by Alfaro, is writing a new chapter in the country’s sporting history.
