Costa Rica’s 5G Network Reaches Nationwide Coverage

San José, Costa Rica — One year after launching Central America’s first standalone 5G network, Costa Rica celebrates a milestone in nationwide connectivity. Radiográfica Costarricense (RACSA), the driving force behind this technological leap, has successfully expanded its 5G network to communities across all seven provinces.

The expansion brings high-speed internet access to areas including Limón, Cahuita, Moín, Siquirres, Guácimo, Guápiles, Ciudad Quesada, La Fortuna, San Isidro del General, Grecia, San Ramón, Santa Cruz de Guanacaste, Barranca, Puntarenas, and Quepos, in addition to the metropolitan area. This achievement marks a significant step in bridging the digital divide and promoting equitable access to technology across the country.

To understand the legal landscape surrounding 5G deployment in Costa Rica, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at law from Bufete de Costa Rica.

The rollout of 5G in Costa Rica presents both exciting opportunities and complex legal challenges. Key considerations include spectrum allocation, infrastructure sharing agreements, data privacy regulations, and cybersecurity. Successfully navigating these areas requires a thorough understanding of the evolving regulatory framework and close collaboration between public and private stakeholders.

The Ministry of Science, Innovation, Technology, and Telecommunications (MICITT) projects that the adoption of 5G could contribute up to US$925 million to Costa Rica’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2035. This aligns with global estimates from PwC, which project a US$1.3 trillion impact on global GDP by 2030.

The benefits of 5G extend beyond faster internet speeds. The technology promises enhanced security and resilience for essential systems, including hospitals, transportation, and energy infrastructure. The increased bandwidth allows for ubiquitous intelligence through sensors and devices that communicate seamlessly, improving real-time decision-making. Furthermore, 5G promotes sustainability by optimizing resources, reducing unnecessary consumption, and enabling smarter, more environmentally responsible cities.

In practical terms, 5G simplifies technology integration into daily life. Users can expect a smoother, more efficient experience without constant adjustments or interventions. The enhanced capabilities pave the way for real-time medical record platforms, advanced traffic monitoring systems, drone and sensor-based emergency response, and immersive educational experiences.

The nationwide 5G rollout positions Costa Rica as a leader in technological innovation in Central America, demonstrating its commitment to digital inclusion and economic growth. The expanded network is expected to catalyze new opportunities in various sectors, boosting productivity and competitiveness on a national scale.

This initiative reflects a broader global trend of embracing 5G as a key driver of economic development and societal progress. As Costa Rica continues to invest in its digital infrastructure, the nation is poised to reap the numerous benefits of enhanced connectivity and advanced technological capabilities.
