Costa Rica’s Electric Vehicle Revolution Accelerates at Expomóvil 2025

San José, Costa Rica — Costa Rica’s electric vehicle market is experiencing rapid growth, with imports surging 85% in January 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. Electric vehicles now represent 10% of total vehicle registrations, signaling a shift in consumer preferences towards sustainable transportation. Expomóvil 2025 served as a key platform for showcasing the latest EV models and educating potential buyers about the transition to electric mobility.

XPENG, backed by Grupo Purdy, a prominent automotive group in Costa Rica, has recognized the increasing interest in electric vehicles and the need for clear guidance for prospective buyers. They offered key insights at Expomóvil 2025 to empower consumers to choose the right EV for their lifestyle.

To understand the legal landscape surrounding the rise of electric vehicles in Costa Rica, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.

The increasing popularity of electric vehicles presents both opportunities and challenges for Costa Rican law. While existing regulations address vehicle imports and sales, specific legislation regarding charging infrastructure, battery disposal, and incentives for EV adoption is still evolving. This creates a dynamic legal environment for businesses operating in the EV sector, requiring careful navigation of existing laws and anticipation of future regulatory developments. For consumers, understanding their rights and responsibilities related to EV ownership, including warranty protections and access to charging facilities, is crucial.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas’ insights highlight the crucial intersection of evolving technology and adapting legislation. The dynamism he describes underscores the need for both businesses and consumers to stay informed and proactive as Costa Rica navigates the exciting transition to electric mobility. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for offering this valuable perspective.

From XPENG, with the backing of Grupo Purdy, we know that interest in electric vehicles has grown exponentially in the country, and with it, the need for clear and accurate information for new buyers. For this reason, we know it is key to provide drivers with tools that allow them to choose the model that best suits their lifestyle and needs.

XPENG highlighted five crucial factors to consider when purchasing an electric vehicle: range, charging infrastructure, maintenance, safety and technology, and maximizing performance. Potential buyers are encouraged to carefully assess their daily driving needs and typical routes to determine the appropriate range. Factors such as driving style, speed, weather, and terrain can significantly impact battery range.

Evaluating available charging options, both at home and in public charging stations, is essential. Installing a home charger can optimize charging times and costs. Grupo Purdy highlighted the efficiency of fast charging, enabling a vehicle with a 60 kWh battery and a 400 km range to charge from 30% to over 80% in just over an hour.

While electric vehicles require less maintenance than combustion engine vehicles, regular checks of moving parts and electrical connections by a certified technician are crucial for optimal performance. Modern EVs offer advanced driver-assistance systems, connectivity features, and safety systems that enhance the driving experience. Understanding these technologies and how they contribute to personalization and comfort is key to a seamless transition to electric mobility.

Maximizing EV performance involves understanding driving modes and charging best practices. Utilizing a 240V home charging station is generally recommended to minimize battery degradation and reduce reliance on fast charging. XPENG emphasizes the importance of educating drivers on how to optimize the benefits of electric mobility.

The key is to understand how to get the most out of the advantages of electric mobility. At XPENG, we focus on accompanying each driver in this process, ensuring they can fully enjoy their experience.
