Costa Rica’s Exports Show Strong Q1 2025 Growth

Costa Rica’s Exports Show Strong Q1 2025 Growth

San José, Costa Rica — Costa Rica’s export sector demonstrated robust growth in the first quarter of 2025, reaching US$5.186 billion in goods, a 12% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This translates to an additional US$564 million in export value, according to data released by the Foreign Trade Promotion Agency (PROCOMER).

The primary driver of this growth was the precision and medical equipment sector, which experienced a remarkable 26% surge, totaling US$2.401 million. The agricultural sector also contributed positively with a 1% increase, fueled by exports of coffee, frozen fruits, and yucca. March was a particularly strong month for agriculture, recording the highest export value in the past year.

To gain a deeper understanding of the legal landscape surrounding Costa Rican exports, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.

Costa Rican exports thrive due to a combination of factors, including favorable trade agreements and a strong focus on sustainable practices. However, navigating international trade regulations requires careful attention to detail, particularly concerning intellectual property rights and compliance with destination country requirements. Businesses engaging in export activities should seek legal counsel to ensure they are operating within the bounds of both Costa Rican and international law, maximizing their opportunities while mitigating potential risks.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas’ emphasis on legal counsel is crucial. Navigating the complexities of international trade, especially regarding intellectual property and compliance, can be a minefield for businesses. Proactive legal advice can not only protect exporters from costly missteps but also unlock strategic advantages in the global marketplace. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable insights into this critical aspect of Costa Rican exports.

Other sectors also showed positive growth, including the chemical-pharmaceutical sector (up 18% due to increased shipments of antisera and medicines), livestock and fishing (up 10% driven by beef and dairy), metalworking (up 7%), and electrical and electronics (up 6%). The electrical and electronics sector notably rebounded from a slower start in January and February, mirroring a trend observed in 2024.

However, not all sectors experienced growth. The food sector declined by 5%, primarily due to reduced exports of sugar and palm oil, while rubber exports fell by 4%.

The first quarter presents a robust increase in exports of 12%. We continue to grow in almost all sectors, led by medical devices with a 26% increase and agriculture reversing the slight drop registered in February. Growth is also registered in most regions. We are making efforts to maintain this trend amid uncertainty in the trade landscape.
Manuel Tovar, Minister of Foreign Trade

North America remained the primary destination for Costa Rican exports, showing a 17% increase (+$372 million). Growth was also observed in exports to Europe (up 8%), Central America (up 11%), and Asia (up 3%). Exports to South America, however, decreased by 12%.

The figures for the first quarter reflect the dynamism and resilience of the Costa Rican export sector, reaffirming our ability to maintain growth, even in a complex international context. From PROCOMER, we continue working to open doors and consolidate new destinations for our products and services, through various actions such as promotion strategies and trade facilitation.
Laura López, General Manager of PROCOMER

While the focus remains on the strong performance of goods exports in Q1 2025, it’s worth noting that the services sector also maintained a positive trajectory in 2024. Services exports reached US$16.114 billion (US$10.661 million excluding travel), marking an 8.9% increase compared to 2023. This growth was primarily driven by travel (tourism), business services, information technology and telecommunications, maintenance and repair, and intellectual property charges.

The positive performance of both goods and services exports highlights the diverse strengths of the Costa Rican economy and its ability to adapt to global market fluctuations. The government and PROCOMER remain committed to fostering continued growth and diversification within the export sector.
