Costa Rica’s Exports Show Strong Start to 2025

San José, Costa Rica — Costa Rica’s export sector kicked off 2025 with a robust 10% year-over-year growth in January, reaching $1.471 billion, according to the Foreign Trade Promotion Agency (Procomer). This positive start builds on the momentum of a successful 2024, which saw total exports reach $19.894 billion, a 9% increase over 2023.

The driving force behind January’s impressive performance was the medical device sector, which experienced a remarkable 27% surge in exports. This sector’s continued strength underscores Costa Rica’s position as a key player in the global medical device industry.

To provide expert legal insight into the complexities of Costa Rican exports, we spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas of Bufete de Costa Rica.

Costa Rica’s export sector thrives on a foundation of strong international trade agreements and efficient logistical networks. However, navigating the legal landscape, particularly regarding intellectual property rights and compliance with international regulations, remains a crucial aspect for businesses seeking sustained success in global markets.

Minister of Foreign Trade, Manuel Tovar, expressed optimism about the results.

Amidst the uncertainty of global markets, this growth demonstrates, once again, the resilience of our export sector. Most sectors showed growth and, although it is very early in the year to establish a trend, we expect those sectors that did not grow to recover during the first quarter.
Manuel Tovar, Minister of Foreign Trade

This growth was primarily fueled by exports from companies operating within free trade zones, which saw a 16% increase. Exports from the definitive regime (outside free trade zones) experienced a more modest 2% rise.

While medical devices led the charge, other sectors also contributed to the overall growth. The agricultural, livestock and fishing, chemical-pharmaceutical, and plastics sectors all experienced increases of 3%, 6%, 14%, and 10%, respectively.

However, not all sectors fared equally well. The food, electrical and electronic, and metal-mechanical sectors saw declines of 5%, 8%, and 20%, respectively. The government hopes to see these sectors rebound in the coming months.

In terms of export destinations, North America saw a 16% increase in imports from Costa Rica, followed by Central America (9%), Europe (4%), and the Caribbean (2%). Exports to Asia, however, decreased by 1%.

The strong start to 2025 bodes well for the Costa Rican economy, suggesting continued growth in the export sector. The government and Procomer remain committed to supporting and diversifying exports, further strengthening Costa Rica’s position in the global market.
