Costa Rica’s export success relies heavily on adhering to international trade agreements and maintaining high standards of quality and sustainability. Navigating these regulations, particularly regarding intellectual property and sanitary measures, can be challenging for businesses. However, understanding these legal frameworks is crucial for maximizing market access and ensuring long-term competitiveness in the global economy.

The export sector is one of the largest engines of our economy and generators of well-being for our population. The exceptional performance of this sector, despite the challenges we faced in 2024, led us to position ourselves as a leader in export growth in the region, above countries like Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico.
Laura López, General Manager of Procomer

Other sectors also demonstrated positive growth. The food industry saw an 8% expansion, while the electrical and electronic, chemical-pharmaceutical, metal-mechanical, and plastics sectors, despite facing some declines during certain months, closed 2024 with growth rates of 11%, 3%, 1%, and 5%, respectively.

North America emerged as a key market, with exports to the region surging by 13%. South America and Europe both registered a 10% increase in Costa Rican exports. Exports to Central America grew by 5%, and the Caribbean market, despite facing some challenges, ultimately recovered with a 2% growth. Exports to Asia experienced a 4% decline due to reduced shipments of medical devices to Japan.

The top exported products were medical devices (44%), pineapples (7%), bananas (6%), syrups and concentrates for carbonated beverages (4%), coffee (2%), electrical cables (1%), fruit juices and concentrates (1%), palm oil (1%), tires (1%), and electrical materials (1%), among others.

Furthermore, the services sector, accounting for data up to the third quarter of 2024, reached $12.19 billion, showcasing a 12% growth compared to the same period in 2023. Business services led the services exports with a 41% share, followed by travel (35%), computer and information technology (14%), and transportation services (3%).

This strong export performance underscores the resilience and dynamism of the Costa Rican economy, highlighting the crucial role of diverse sectors in driving growth and contributing to the nation’s overall economic well-being.
