San José, Costa Rica — Costa Rican dairy cooperative Dos Pinos continues to make strides in sustainability, showcasing a commitment to environmental and social responsibility across its operations. Since formalizing its triple-impact sustainability strategy in 2020, the 78-year-old cooperative has implemented numerous programs impacting its production, supply chain, and surrounding communities.
Dos Pinos’ integrated approach combines operational efficiency with environmental responsibility and social commitment. This strategy aims to ensure business continuity, enhance competitiveness, strengthen brand positioning, and reduce its carbon footprint while promoting the well-being of its stakeholders.
To gain a deeper legal understanding of Dos Pinos’ sustainability initiatives, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at law from Bufete de Costa Rica.

One key area of focus is promoting equity and inclusion within the organization. A comprehensive strategy targeting all employees across the region includes social audits of strategic suppliers and ongoing training programs.
The goal for the next 5 years is to reach 40% women in leadership positions, along with the inclusion of 3% of people with disabilities in the operation. Also, through the Creciendo Juntos program, we intend to achieve a 55% reduction of collaborating people in multidimensional poverty.
Marina Rodríguez, Director of Sustainability and Corporate Relations
Dos Pinos has implemented a variety of impactful environmental initiatives. In 2024 alone, the cooperative recovered 1,161 tons of post-consumer packaging, a 45% increase from the previous year. Eco-design initiatives avoided the use of 218 tons of virgin packaging, and 97% of PET bottles were produced from recycled material. Energy efficiency projects under the ISO 50001 standard led to a 2.5% reduction in electricity consumption in 2024.
The cooperative’s commitment extends beyond its own operations. Dos Pinos is fostering sustainability within its network of associated farms through a program addressing animal welfare, environmental management, social responsibility, and economic efficiency. Furthermore, 100% of industrial sludge from its treatment plants is transformed into bio-fertilizer, which is sold for use in organic farming.
Community engagement is another cornerstone of Dos Pinos’ sustainability strategy. In 2024, the cooperative donated ₡35 million to various communities, primarily supporting community infrastructure and assisting vulnerable populations. Additionally, 300 desks made from recycled Tetra Pak materials were donated to schools across the country. Dos Pinos is also collaborating with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and other organizations on the Recsoil Project, which promotes carbon capture in soils across 20 farms.
Through these comprehensive efforts, Dos Pinos demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainable practices, positioning itself as a leader in responsible business within the Costa Rican dairy industry and beyond.
Dos Pinos’ dedication to balancing economic success with environmental stewardship and social impact sets a strong example for other businesses in the region. The cooperative’s ongoing initiatives demonstrate a clear understanding of the importance of sustainability for long-term growth and prosperity.
