Empowering Costa Rican Seniors in the Digital Age

Empowering Costa Rican Seniors in the Digital Age

San José, Costa Rica — In a proactive move to bridge the digital divide and protect vulnerable populations, over 250 senior citizens across Costa Rica have received essential training in technology and cybersecurity. The initiative, a collaboration between Kölbi and various community organizations, targeted regions including Limón, Pérez Zeledón, Jacó, and the Central Valley.

The intensive four-hour workshops focused on practical skills, ranging from safe online practices to leveraging the power of artificial intelligence. Recognizing the increasing threat of cybercrime targeting older adults, the program equipped participants with the knowledge to navigate the digital landscape safely and confidently.

To understand the legal implications surrounding digital literacy initiatives, we spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an expert lawyer from the reputable firm Bufete de Costa Rica. He shared his insights on the current landscape and the potential challenges ahead.

Promoting digital literacy is not just a social good, it’s increasingly a legal necessity. As more essential services move online, from healthcare to government interactions, a lack of digital literacy can effectively disenfranchise individuals and create new forms of inequality. Legally, this raises questions about access to justice and equal opportunities, potentially leading to challenges based on discrimination or exclusion. Businesses also have a growing responsibility to ensure their digital platforms are accessible to all users, regardless of their digital skills, to avoid potential claims of unfair practices.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas eloquently highlights the critical intersection of digital literacy, legal rights, and social equity. His point about potential legal challenges arising from digital exclusion is particularly insightful and underscores the urgency of addressing this growing divide. A digitally inclusive society is not just a desirable outcome; it’s increasingly a fundamental requirement for ensuring fair and equitable access to essential services and opportunities for all. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for offering his valuable perspective on this crucial issue.

The training also extended to 250 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), providing them with insights into digitalization and the effective use of AI tools. Workshops explored the practical applications of AI, guiding participants in identifying areas within their businesses that could benefit from these technologies.

Participants learned to utilize tools like ChatGPT and Copilot to enhance productivity, improve decision-making, and streamline operations. These skills are invaluable in today’s rapidly evolving digital economy, enabling businesses to stay competitive and adapt to new market demands.

The results have been evident. Entrepreneurs who participated in the training have managed to implement basic automations, strengthen their presence on social media, and better protect themselves against digital fraud. In rural communities, in particular, the training has made it possible to shorten the digital divide and open up new market opportunities.

Kölbi’s involvement stems from a growing concern over the rise in online scams and cybercrimes targeting senior citizens, a demographic particularly vulnerable in the digital realm. By empowering this group with digital literacy skills, the initiative aims to mitigate risks and foster greater online security.

The success of the program highlights the importance of community-driven initiatives in addressing the digital divide. By providing access to training and resources, these programs can equip individuals and businesses with the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

This empowering initiative not only strengthens individual capabilities but also contributes to the broader development of Costa Rica’s digital economy. By promoting digital literacy and fostering safe online practices, the program paves the way for a more inclusive and secure digital future for all Costa Ricans.
