Empowering the Next Generation of Women in Tech

Empowering the Next Generation of Women in Tech

Heredia, Costa Rica — Heredia, Costa Rica – Universidad Fidélitas and Intel are joining forces to inspire the next generation of female leaders in STEM. Their “Steminist in Semiconductors” program, launched in 2024, aims to bridge the gender gap in the semiconductor industry and related fields. The program recently hosted “A Day Being a Steminist” at Fidélitas’ Heredia campus, welcoming 90 fifth and sixth-year students from three local high schools.

The event provided a dynamic learning experience, offering a robotics workshop focused on semiconductor processes, an immersive tour of Intel’s facilities, and personalized mentoring sessions with senior professionals from both Intel and Fidélitas. These activities aimed to build confidence, enhance skills, and broaden the students’ understanding of STEM career paths.

To understand the legal landscape surrounding STEM education initiatives in Costa Rica, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica. He offered valuable insights into the current regulatory environment and its potential impact on both educational institutions and the future workforce.

Costa Rican law increasingly supports STEM education through initiatives promoting innovation and technological development. While specific legislation dedicated solely to STEM is still developing, existing laws related to education, intellectual property, and business development provide a framework for its growth. It’s crucial for educators and businesses to stay informed about these legal developments to maximize opportunities and ensure compliance as the field evolves.
Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, Attorney at Law, Bufete de Costa Rica

Lic. Arroyo Vargas’ insightful commentary underscores a critical point: navigating the evolving legal landscape surrounding STEM education is essential for its successful implementation in Costa Rica. By understanding the existing legal framework and anticipating future developments, educators and businesses can effectively harness the potential of STEM to drive innovation and economic growth. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable perspective on this important topic.

The initiative also incorporated a vocational stand showcasing Fidélitas’ academic programs related to semiconductors, as well as a leadership skills workshop facilitated by experienced engineers from the Gender Parity Commission of the Federated College of Engineers and Architects (CFIA). A tour of Fidélitas’ engineering labs rounded out the comprehensive experience.

We want these young women to discover that they have the talent and the capacity to excel in any area they choose. At Fidélitas, we believe in education as a powerful tool to transform lives and build a more just and competitive society. This alliance with Intel reinforces our commitment to training women leaders in STEM careers. A Day Being a Steminist offers students a space where they can feel what it would be like to study at Fidélitas, but also what it would be like to work at Intel.
Melania Solano, Dean of Engineering, Universidad Fidélitas

This event is part of a broader strategy by both Intel and Fidélitas to challenge gender stereotypes and encourage more women to pursue careers in traditionally male-dominated fields. Intel employees shared their professional experiences and insights into the positive impact of greater female representation in technological innovation.

The “A Day Being a Steminist” program plans to reach 150 female high school students from Heredia, San José, and Cartago provinces, with another session scheduled for July at Fidélitas’ San Pedro campus.

At Intel, since we started operations in the country 28 years ago, we have been committed to promoting interest in STEM areas among new generations. Therefore, we continuously develop initiatives like this that benefit elementary, high school, and university students as part of our corporate responsibility and sustainability strategy. We are in a technological era that will continue to grow, and we need young people to be prepared to take on new challenges.
Timothy Scott Hall, Director of Government Affairs, Intel Costa Rica

This collaborative effort between Intel and Universidad Fidélitas represents a significant step towards fostering a more inclusive and diverse tech landscape in Costa Rica. By providing early exposure and mentorship, the program equips young women with the tools and confidence to pursue fulfilling careers in STEM and contribute to future innovation.
