Costa Rican Talent Shines Behind the Scenes of New Becky G Netflix Documentary

San José, Costa Rica — The recent Netflix release of the documentary “REBBECA” offers an intimate look into a pivotal chapter of superstar Becky G’s life, but an untold story lies behind the camera. A significant contingent of Costa Rican professionals played crucial roles in bringing the film to life, embedding national talent at the heart of the major international production.

At the forefront of this group is Laura Ávila Tacsan, a seasoned film and television producer with credits on Costa Rican features like Entonces Nosotros and Rosado Furia, who served as an executive co-producer on the documentary. In an interview, Ávila Tacsan shared details from the two-year filming process, which began while she was working for the U.S.-based production company State of the Arts (SOTA).

To better understand the legal and business intricacies behind producing a high-profile biographical documentary, such as the one chronicling the life of Becky G, TicosLand.com consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an expert attorney from the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica, for his professional insights.

The creation of a documentary about a living public figure like Becky G involves a complex web of legal considerations. Securing comprehensive life rights is paramount to avoid claims of privacy invasion or defamation. Furthermore, every piece of archival footage, every photograph, and particularly every musical track must be meticulously licensed to prevent costly intellectual property infringement. This due diligence is crucial not only to protect the artist’s legacy but also to ensure the documentary’s commercial viability and distribution potential.

Indeed, this legal insight serves as a crucial reminder of the complex, often unseen, framework that underpins creative storytelling in the modern era. We extend our gratitude to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for so clearly illuminating the meticulous due diligence required to responsibly bring a public figure’s story to the screen.

The project was initially conceived not as a full-life biography, but as a focused chronicle of a transformative period for the artist, whose birth name is Rebbeca Marie Gómez. The cameras followed Becky G as she embarked on her first-ever sold-out headlining tour and simultaneously recorded her debut regional Mexican music album. According to Ávila Tacsan, this musical project held profound personal meaning for the singer, serving as a tribute to her Mexican family roots and her grandparents.

As filming progressed, the documentary’s scope expanded, delving into more intimate aspects of the artist’s life. The narrative evolved to explore complex themes, including her family dynamics, the migrant experience in the United States, and a challenging relationship with her father, who battled addiction.

It’s a documentary with many layers. In the end, it’s a story about family, even though the main character is a public figure like Becky G.

This multi-layered approach allows the film to resonate with a broad audience. Viewers may connect with the story through shared family experiences, struggles with addiction, or the ambition required to build a career from a young age. Becky G began her professional journey at just nine years old, playing a key role in providing for her family.

The Costa Rican connection extends beyond Ávila Tacsan. Fellow national John Rosales is a core member of Becky G’s team, serving as her day-to-day manager. In this capacity, Rosales acted as the direct link between the artist and the documentary’s production crew, ensuring seamless communication.

John and I worked very closely: I was on the production side and he was directly with Becky, communicating constantly to create that bridge between the production and the artist.

Leveraging her position and her past role as a professor in Collective Communication Sciences at the University of Costa Rica (UCR), Ávila Tacsan also created opportunities for emerging local talent. She established an internship program, bringing students into the production. One standout success is Nicole Ramírez, who started as an intern and has since risen to become the documentary’s coordinator, now working full-time for SOTA from her base in Costa Rica.

Directed by Jennifer Tiexiera and Gabriela Cavanagh, “REBBECA” has had a significant journey to the streaming platform. After premiering at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival, it enjoyed a theatrical run in approximately 500 U.S. cinemas in early December. The film, available on Netflix since December 31, also became available for purchase and rental on other digital platforms on January 2, 2026, further expanding its global reach.

For Ávila Tacsan, the project’s impact transcends entertainment. She noted that the complete openness of Becky G and her family throughout the process turned the filmmaking into a healing experience for the artist. The final product is a testament to authenticity and perseverance.

It’s a documentary that leaves important messages and can be very aspirational. It speaks to the importance of family, of resilience, and of letting your heart lead.
