Equifax Doubles Down on Costa Rica with New Campus

Heredia, Costa Rica — Equifax, a global leader in data-driven solutions, has announced a $30 million investment in a new campus in Heredia, Costa Rica. This expansion, marking their 30th anniversary in the country, will create 300 new jobs, adding to their existing workforce of 1,200 employees. The new campus, located in the Savia development, is projected to open in early 2027 and will complement their existing facility in San José.

This investment signifies Equifax’s continued confidence in Costa Rica’s skilled workforce and stable business environment. Having started operations in Costa Rica in 1995 as one of the first five multinational companies in the country, Equifax has steadily grown its presence, evolving from basic data digitization to providing cutting-edge technology support in areas like cloud computing, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence.

To understand the legal ramifications of Equifax’s expansion, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at law from Bufete de Costa Rica.

Equifax’s expansion in Costa Rica presents exciting opportunities but also raises important legal considerations. Data privacy and security are paramount. Compliance with Costa Rican law, particularly Ley 8968 (Protección de Datos Personales), will be crucial for Equifax to maintain public trust and avoid potential legal challenges. The expansion’s impact on the local credit reporting landscape and competition within the financial sector warrants close scrutiny as well.
Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, Attorney at Law, Bufete de Costa Rica

Lic. Arroyo Vargas rightly highlights the delicate balance between opportunity and responsibility that Equifax’s expansion represents. The intersection of international business and data privacy is a complex one, and careful navigation of Costa Rica’s legal framework will be essential for long-term success. The potential impact on local competition is also a key area to observe in the coming months and years. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable contribution to this discussion and his expert perspective on this important development.

The new 10,000 square meter campus will adhere to LEED sustainability standards, reflecting Equifax’s commitment to environmentally responsible practices. The development will provide a modern and collaborative workspace for employees, supporting the company’s continued growth and innovation.

We are proud to continue our growth in Costa Rica. As Equifax advances its cloud transformation and leverages these new capabilities to accelerate our potential in artificial intelligence, our Global Services Center in Costa Rica allows us to accelerate innovation with key talent that in turn provides support to our customers to provide them with the best experience.
Mark Begor, CEO of Equifax

The Costa Rican government welcomed the investment, highlighting its contribution to the country’s thriving technology sector. Minister of Foreign Trade Manuel Tovar expressed his gratitude for Equifax’s long-standing presence and its evolution into a high-value-added service provider. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening Costa Rica’s investment climate and further boosting technology exports.

We are proud to witness a new expansion of Equifax in Costa Rica, as one of the pioneering companies in the country. We appreciate their trajectory, which is a clear example of transformation towards service operations of the highest added value and a reflection of the fact that, in our country, they have found the stability, the conditions, and the talent to continue growing. From COMEX and PROCOMER, we continue with the commitment to further strengthen Costa Rica’s investment climate so that our technology exports, which today reach approximately $2.4 billion and position us among the leaders in the region, continue to be boosted even more.
Manuel Tovar, Minister of Foreign Trade

Beyond its economic impact, Equifax has played a key role in developing technological skills within Costa Rica, collaborating with the National Learning Institute (INA) and the Ministry of Science, Innovation, Technology and Telecommunications (MICITT) to incorporate cloud computing into the national education system. The company has also trained over 400 public sector employees in cybersecurity practices, further demonstrating its commitment to developing local talent.

Currently, Equifax is actively recruiting for roles such as Automation Analysts (RPA, ML, AI), software and cloud computing developers, data analysts, cybersecurity analysts and engineers, financial and operations professionals, and customer support specialists.
