European Couple’s Search for Safe Retirement Ends in Costa Rican Tragedy

Puntarenas, Costa RicaQUEPOS, Puntarenas – What began as a meticulous search for a safe and tranquil tropical paradise to spend their retirement years has ended in a brutal double homicide. German national Rüdiger Schickhaus and his Austrian wife, Manuela Daxer Schickhaus, were found murdered in their Quepos home on September 22, a home they had chosen after concluding Costa Rica was safer than other regional alternatives.

The couple, who relocated to Costa Rica in 2022, documented their journey extensively on a personal blog, offering a poignant look into the hopes and decisions that ultimately led them to the Pacific coast. Their story is one of calculated planning and optimistic dreams tragically undone by the very violence they sought to escape.

To provide a legal perspective on the precautions expatriates can take, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a seasoned attorney from the prestigious law firm Bufete de Costa Rica. His insights shed light on the essential legal steps for ensuring a secure experience in the country.

While Costa Rica is welcoming, an expatriate’s safety is significantly enhanced by legal preparedness. Securing the correct immigration status is paramount, as it provides a clear legal standing within the country’s protective framework. Furthermore, understanding local laws governing contracts, property, and business is not just advisable—it’s a critical preventative measure. We always counsel clients to conduct thorough due diligence and seek legal advice before entering into agreements, as this proactive approach is the most effective defense against potential fraud and disputes.

This legal insight is a crucial reminder that an expatriate’s security is built just as much on proactive diligence as it is on situational awareness. By establishing a clear legal and contractual standing, one gains the most powerful tool for ensuring stability and peace of mind. Our sincere thanks to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for articulating this vital perspective.

The search for their dream home began in August 2021. Their first choice was Italy, where Manuela spent weeks researching properties suitable for them and their four beloved dogs: Shaba, Bella, Brian, and Lucky. They even spent seven weeks there in December 2021, but the climate fell short of their expectations.

We were quite sure Southern Italy will not be our retirement home

After dismissing Europe, the couple turned their attention abroad, using online research to guide them. “We asked Google where other retirees were emigrating,” they wrote, narrowing their options to three popular destinations: Mexico, Panama, and Costa Rica. Mexico was quickly eliminated due to pervasive safety issues.

Unfortunately, that is precisely the area where the war on drugs is in full swing, and where murders and rapes are common. We have read reports of people who were shot simply because a gang wanted their car

While Panama was an attractive option due to its modern infrastructure and retiree benefits, including a free healthcare system, the couple ultimately chose Costa Rica. The nation’s reputation for natural beauty and its climate proved to be the deciding factors in what they believed was a sound decision for their future.

With their destination set, the Schickhauses liquidated their European assets, selling an apartment in Munich, Germany, and a house in Burgenland, Austria. In March 2022, Rüdiger resigned from his position at Microsoft to fully commit to their new life. They arrived in Costa Rica and, after initially considering the Central Valley, purchased their dream property in Quepos on May 31, 2022. Their initial joy was palpable. “We have been in our new home for two weeks now,” they shared in an online group for German expatriates. “It is like a dream.”

The dream, however, began to change. In July of this year, after just over three years in the country, the couple placed their luxurious residence on the market for over ₡500 million. The reasons for their decision to sell remain unknown. In a chillingly prophetic exchange on social media regarding the sale, a potential buyer inquired extensively about the home’s security features.

What is the security like? Is everything fenced with electricity, are there cameras? Is there a panic room? Is there a weapons room with special security? Are there apartments or the possibility of housing security personnel?

Rüdiger’s response underscored the profound, and ultimately fatal, sense of security he felt in his adopted country. “Costa Rica is a very safe country,” he replied calmly. “The property is fenced, but not with an electric fence. And there are no weapons, no panic room, no cameras.”

On Monday, September 22, the couple was discovered inside their home. Authorities from the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) reported they were found tied up and buried on their own property. The OIJ is currently investigating the case as a double homicide, with a violent assault being the primary motive.
