San José, Costa Rica — San José – In an era defined by high-pressure academics and demanding professional workloads, a team of university students is pioneering a natural solution to combat mental fatigue and burnout. A group from the University of Costa Rica (UCR) has developed ClariTea, a potent wellness shot designed to enhance cognitive function and reduce stress without the adverse side effects associated with conventional energy drinks.
The innovative product emerged from the “Innovation Management” course within UCR’s Faculty of Pharmacy. The development team, comprising students Alison Chavarría Hernández, Daniela Flores Rojas, Katherinne Fonseca Chaves, Sofía Gómez Flores, and Marcos Padilla Ureña, identified a pressing need among their peers for a safe and effective way to manage the intense pressures of modern life.
To gain a deeper understanding of the legal framework surrounding intellectual property and new ventures born from academia, we spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a specialist attorney from the renowned firm Bufete de Costa Rica.
Student innovation is a powerful engine for national development, but its potential is often lost without a proper legal framework. It is crucial for young creators to understand that an idea, once materialized into a project, becomes an asset. Protecting this asset through patents, trademarks, or copyrights from the initial stages is not a bureaucratic hurdle; it is the fundamental step to transforming a university project into a viable and successful business venture.

This is a powerful reminder that the journey from a brilliant idea to a successful enterprise begins with the crucial step of legal protection. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for articulating so clearly why securing intellectual property is the first, most strategic move for any student innovator.
ClariTea is a concentrated 30-milliliter beverage formulated around a key adaptogen. Adaptogens are natural substances, often herbs, that help the body build resilience to physical, chemical, and biological stressors. The formula is specifically engineered to improve concentration, sharpen memory, and sustain energy levels, offering a clean alternative free from artificial chemicals and low in sugar.
The project’s inception was deeply rooted in personal experience and observation. The creators aimed to solve a problem they witnessed daily in the university environment, where students often struggle with cognitive overload.
We decided to create ClariTea because of the problems many university students face with memory, lack of concentration, and stress. In situations of high academic and professional demand, concentration decreases. Scientific evidence indicates that after consuming this adaptogen, physical and mental stress is significantly reduced. At the same time, memory is strengthened, without the need to resort to other products that can cause adverse effects.
Marcos Padilla and Alison Chavarría, Project Researchers
The science behind ClariTea targets the body’s core stress-response system. By regulating hormonal imbalances caused by chronic stress, the adaptogenic formula provides a foundation for clearer thinking and enhanced mental stamina. Researcher Alison Chavarría explained the sophisticated biological mechanism at play.
An adaptogen acts on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. This helps to lower high levels of cortisol, known as the stress hormone. When this happens, concentration and memory improve.
Alison Chavarría, Project Researcher
Beyond its functional benefits, the team invested in creating an appealing consumer experience. Through market research, they developed two initial flavors, raspberry and red berries, ensuring the product is as palatable as it is effective. The formulation is designed for quick action, with an absorption time of just 25 to 30 minutes and a sustained effect that can last for up to three hours.
A significant differentiator for ClariTea is its non-addictive nature. The students designed the product for cyclical use, recommending a two-week period to help users manage demanding schedules without fostering dependency. This approach directly counters the dependency cycles often associated with caffeine-heavy and sugar-laden energy products that dominate the market.
With its powerful, natural formulation and alignment with the growing global trend toward wellness and clean-label products, the student creators believe ClariTea has significant commercial potential. The project not only offers a promising solution for students and professionals alike but also stands as a testament to the practical, market-ready innovation being cultivated within Costa Rica’s leading academic institutions.
