DEKRA Opens Same-Day Appointments to Ease Inspection Backlog

San José, Costa RicaSan José, Costa Rica – In a significant move to alleviate pressure on vehicle owners and streamline a notoriously stressful process, DEKRA announced this Saturday that it is now offering same-day appointments for technical vehicle inspections across all 16 of its national locations. The initiative aims to help thousands of drivers comply with legal requirements, avoid costly fines, and successfully renew their annual circulation permit, known as the marchamo.

This new measure is particularly critical for owners of vehicles with license plates ending in 1 and 2, as their mandatory inspection period is currently active. Furthermore, the company has extended an olive branch to drivers who were unable to complete their inspection during the 2025 calendar year, providing them a crucial opportunity to regularize their status and legally operate their vehicles on public roads.

To delve into the legal ramifications and consumer rights associated with the mandatory vehicle inspection process, TicosLand.com sought the expert analysis of Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney from the reputable firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

The vehicle inspection certificate is a public document that carries significant legal weight, attesting to a vehicle’s compliance with safety and emissions standards at a specific moment. Should an accident occur due to a mechanical failure that was negligently overlooked during the inspection, the inspection company could face civil liability for damages. It is crucial for vehicle owners to understand that this certificate does not absolve them of their ongoing responsibility to maintain their vehicle, but it does create a shared accountability that can be legally pursued.

This legal clarification is crucial, reframing the inspection certificate from a mere formality into a document of shared accountability with significant legal weight for both drivers and inspection companies. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for providing this invaluable perspective.

The annual vehicle inspection is a non-negotiable prerequisite for paying the marchamo, and the process has historically been a source of anxiety for the public, often characterized by long waits and limited appointment availability. DEKRA’s latest operational enhancement directly addresses these pain points, leveraging improved logistics and system capacity to meet peak demand.

Maureen Ramírez, General Manager of DEKRA, emphasized that the decision is rooted in the company’s dedication to public safety and service efficiency. She urged drivers to take immediate advantage of the increased availability to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and their legal documents are in order.

As part of our commitment to road safety, we have reinforced resources and systems to enable same-day appointments. We call on those with license plates ending in 1 and 2 to schedule their inspection as soon as possible and thus drive with peace of mind.

The operational expansion covers the company’s entire network, which includes 13 fixed stations and three strategically located mobile units. The fixed stations are situated in key areas such as Alajuelita, Cartago, Alajuela, Heredia, Santo Domingo, Pérez Zeledón, Puntarenas, Guápiles, San Carlos, Liberia, Nicoya, Limón, and Cañas. This extensive footprint ensures that the majority of the population has convenient access to an inspection center.

To further accommodate drivers’ schedules, most fixed stations operate on an extended timetable from Monday to Saturday, 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The Cañas station maintains a slightly different schedule, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The three mobile units—located in Grecia (Móvil Norte), Ciudad Neily (Móvil Sur), and San Marcos de Tarrazú (Móvil Central)—provide vital services to more remote communities with their own specialized hours.

Booking an appointment has been simplified through a centralized digital portal. Drivers can visit the official DEKRA Costa Rica website, www.dekra.cr, to select their preferred station, date, and time slot. This proactive measure not only reduces wait times but also contributes to a more organized and efficient system, ultimately enhancing road safety by ensuring more vehicles undergo timely and thorough mechanical evaluations.
