By Alajuela, Costa Rica — ALAJUELA – A Naranjo resident who was one of the first to provide aid following the fatal traffic accident involving Deputy Eliécer Feinzaig has shared a harrowing minute-by-minute account of the rescue efforts. The tragic collision on the Bernardo Soto Highway in Palmares on Friday morning resulted in the death of the lawmaker’s assistant, Érika Benavides Garbanzo, and left Feinzaig and another driver injured.
Leonel Anchía was driving directly behind the pickup truck carrying the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) deputy when it collided with a large truck. He recounted the chaotic aftermath and the difficult decision to shield the injured deputy from the terrible news of his assistant’s fate.

I was heading to San Ramón with my wife to run a quick errand. We were behind the pick-up and some motorcycles.

Anchía told reporters that upon seeing the violent impact, he immediately pulled his vehicle to the side and activated his hazard lights. Spurred on by his wife’s plea to help, he overcame his initial hesitation and approached the devastating scene. The situation was dire, with both the pickup’s driver and the truck driver, identified as Pablo Trigueros, pinned inside their respective vehicles.
“At first I didn’t want to get out of the car, but the situation was becoming serious,” Anchía recalled. “The young man in the pick-up was screaming for help.” While emergency responders were en route, Anchía and his wife focused on assisting Deputy Feinzaig, who was a passenger in the heavily damaged pickup truck. At the time, they had no idea they were helping a prominent national politician.
At that moment we didn’t know the man was a deputy; he asked us to help rescue the trapped people.

Working quickly, Anchía extracted the injured lawmaker from the wreckage. “I grabbed him by his feet and arms, pulled him out, and placed him on the ground so he could remain calm until the Public Force, the Fire Department, or whoever arrived,” he explained. While he tended to Feinzaig, his wife provided comfort, speaking with him to keep him conscious and oriented.
It was during this conversation that the most heartbreaking moment occurred. Feinzaig, suffering from a severe blow to his right ribs, began asking for his assistant. “He told us he was going to San Ramón and then to San Carlos, and he asked about Mrs. Érika,” Anchía said. “We didn’t tell him anything because she was lying down while the Public Force was arriving.” This poignant decision was made to prevent causing the deputy further distress in his critical condition.
The couple’s assistance continued until authorities secured the scene. Anchía’s wife accompanied the deputy in the ambulance to the Carlos Valverde Vega Hospital in San Ramón, a gesture of profound compassion. He also ensured Feinzaig’s personal belongings, including a suitcase and two cell phones, were recovered from the vehicle and handed over to a Public Force officer. “We didn’t know he was a deputy; we helped him out of human kindness,” Anchía affirmed.
Based on his vantage point, Anchía offered a potential cause for the collision, which occurred shortly after 10:30 a.m. He stated that the pickup truck appeared to initiate the contact. “Yes, the pick-up swerved into the side of the truck; at that moment it spun three or four times on its own axis,” he described. The driver of the truck, Pablo Trigueros, was subsequently transported to the San Francisco de Asís Hospital in Grecia for treatment.
