Fatal Procedures Trigger National Health Alert

San José, Costa RicaSan José, Costa Rica – A series of tragic deaths has cast a dark shadow over the nation’s aesthetic surgery industry, prompting Costa Rica’s highest medical authority to issue an urgent public warning. The College of Physicians and Surgeons is calling for extreme caution after three women died this month following cosmetic procedures, raising serious questions about practitioner qualifications and clinic safety standards.

The alarm was amplified last Friday with the confirmed death of a third woman who had undergone an aesthetic surgery at a private clinic. This incident follows two other fatalities recorded in January, creating a disturbing pattern that has mobilized both health and judicial authorities. The cases are now the subject of a formal investigation by the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ), as the medical community grapples with the growing crisis.

Dr. Elliott Garita, President of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Costa Rica, addressed the escalating concerns, noting that the official complaints received by the professional body may only represent the tip of the iceberg. He explained that while the College handles a steady stream of grievances, the true number of adverse events is likely much higher.

The College consistently receives complaints related to aesthetic procedures, with an approximate average of two cases per month. However, this figure could be higher, as not all affected individuals file formal complaints with the professional body; in some cases, they go directly to judicial authorities or reach out-of-court settlements.
Elliott Garita, President of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Costa Rica

A central problem, according to Dr. Garita, is a dangerous public misconception surrounding what is often marketed as “aesthetic medicine.” He stressed that this is not a recognized medical specialty in Costa Rica. Legitimate and complex aesthetic procedures fall exclusively under the specialty of plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgery, a field that demands a rigorous and lengthy training path.

The required specialization involves completing a residency in general surgery before dedicating several additional years to a sub-specialization in plastic surgery. In stark contrast, some general practitioners are performing complex operations after taking only short-term courses in non-invasive procedures. The risk escalates dramatically when these practitioners attempt invasive surgeries, such as tissue resections or implant placements, without the comprehensive training needed to manage severe complications or medical emergencies.

Compounding the risk of unqualified practitioners is the issue of substandard facilities. Dr. Garita warned that many centers offering these procedures lack the essential infrastructure and emergency equipment to respond to a critical event. This deficiency places patients, particularly those with pre-existing medical conditions, in a position of extreme vulnerability, where a complication can quickly become a life-threatening crisis.

In response to the recent fatalities, the College has reiterated its emphatic appeal to the public. Before undergoing any aesthetic intervention, individuals are urged to conduct thorough due diligence. The College’s official public records provide a crucial tool for verifying that a medical professional is properly registered and possesses the required specialty certification. This simple step can be the difference between a successful outcome and a catastrophic one.
