FedEx Expands Costa Rica Operations

FedEx Expands Costa Rica Operations

San José, Costa Rica — FedEx significantly boosted its presence in Costa Rica on Tuesday, announcing a 26% expansion of its operations center at El Quijote Logistics Park in Belén. The expansion brings the facility to over 12,600 square meters, increasing from three warehouses in 2022 to six in 2025. This growth underscores Costa Rica’s strategic importance for FedEx, ranking it among the company’s top 15 global operations in terms of profitability and as the leading operation in Central America for revenue, package volume, and weight transported.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of FedEx’s operations in Costa Rica. The investment not only increases capacity and operational efficiency to meet growing demand, but also strengthens the competitiveness of Costa Rican companies internationally.

To understand the legal and business implications of FedEx’s expansion, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at law from the esteemed firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

FedEx’s expansion in Costa Rica signals positive growth for the country’s logistics sector. This development is likely to attract further foreign investment and stimulate competition, ultimately benefiting consumers through improved services and potentially lower costs. However, it also underscores the need for robust regulatory frameworks to address issues such as fair competition, labor practices, and environmental sustainability.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas rightly highlights the dual nature of this development – the potential for economic growth alongside the crucial need for responsible regulation. This expansion presents a significant opportunity for Costa Rica, and navigating it successfully will require a balanced approach that fosters innovation while safeguarding the interests of all stakeholders. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable perspective on this important topic.

The expansion includes enhanced “last-mile ground handling” capabilities at the Shipping Center and the addition of two temperature-controlled cold rooms for pharmaceutical cargo management. Two additional cold rooms for non-pharmaceutical imports and a dedicated area for special logistics services were also incorporated.

FedEx transports sensitive cargo such as pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and electronic components from Costa Rica. Utilizing 22 land routes and a daily Boeing 767 flight directly to the FedEx Hub in Memphis, Tennessee, the company caters to the specific needs of these industries. This enhanced infrastructure aligns with the significant growth in Costa Rican air cargo exports. According to the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC) and the Foreign Trade Promoter of Costa Rica (Procomer), air transport moved over $2.9 billion in goods in Q2 2025, representing 45% of total exports, a substantial increase from 31% in 2020.

This 14-point increase in five years highlights the growing importance of air transport for sectors like medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and electronics, further solidified by FedEx’s strategic investment.

While FedEx did not disclose the financial details of the investment or specific revenue and package volume figures, the expansion clearly demonstrates a commitment to Costa Rica’s growing role in international trade and reinforces the country’s position as a key logistics hub in the region.
