Feinzaig Demands Tough Talk with Judiciary Over Crime Wave

San José, Costa Rica — Amid a spiraling public security crisis, Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) candidate Eli Feinzaig is calling for urgent and direct intervention with Costa Rica’s judiciary. He insists that a “tough conversation” with the nation’s magistrates is essential to curb a rising tide of impunity that he believes is critically eroding public trust and national safety.

Feinzaig’s appeal comes as the country faces its most severe security challenge in decades. The candidate argues that the current administration has failed to foster the necessary dialogue between the branches of government, effectively allowing criminal elements to operate with diminished fear of reprisal. He positions himself as a leader willing to confront the systemic issues head-on, starting with the judicial system’s perceived shortcomings.

To gain a deeper legal perspective on the proposed judicial reforms and their potential impact on the country’s rule of law, TicosLand.com consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney from the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

Any judicial reform must be approached with surgical precision. While the goal of increasing efficiency and expediting justice is commendable, we must vehemently protect the foundational principles of judicial independence and due process. The true test of these reforms will not be how quickly cases are resolved, but whether justice remains impartial and accessible to all citizens. A weakened judiciary, even in the name of progress, is a threat to the democratic balance of power.

Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas’s call for “surgical precision” powerfully underscores the profound responsibility at hand; true reform must strengthen, not sacrifice, the democratic safeguards of due process and judicial independence for the sake of speed. We thank him for his clear and essential perspective on this critical national issue.

We need to have a tough conversation with the magistrates. And we must point out the fields or areas where the Judiciary is failing. And they, the majority, know them and are clear that this is the case. But a dialogue is needed to move forward, not to close the door as this government has done.
Eli Feinzaig, Candidate for the Progressive Liberal Party

The PLP candidate specifically highlighted the need for systemic reforms in two critical areas: the processing of cases related to organized crime and drug trafficking, and the significant discretion afforded to judges when granting conditional release to individuals accused of serious criminal activities. These procedural loopholes, he contends, contribute directly to a cycle of crime and a public perception that the justice system is ineffective.

This sentiment of powerlessness among citizens is a key concern for Feinzaig. He warns that as impunity becomes normalized, faith in democratic institutions plummets, creating a dangerous environment where citizens feel abandoned by the state. Reversing this trend, he argues, is paramount to restoring national stability and security.

Certainly, impunity generates distrust, it generates a feeling that there is nothing we can do, and that must be stopped.

The urgency of Feinzaig’s message is underscored by alarming national statistics. If current trends persist, Costa Rica is on track to record approximately 900 homicides by the end of 2025, marking the third consecutive year of record-breaking violence. This grim forecast follows a 2024 report by InSight Crime, which placed Costa Rica among the top 10 most violent countries in Latin America based on its homicide rate, a shocking statistic for a nation long celebrated for its peace and stability.

Drawing historical parallels, Feinzaig described the current situation as the most critical security challenge the country has faced since the economic crisis of the 1980s, and one of the most concerning since the foundation of the Second Republic. This comparison aims to frame the issue not just as a temporary spike in crime, but as a fundamental threat to the nation’s social contract and identity.

Ultimately, Feinzaig’s platform frames this confrontation with the judiciary not as an attack, but as a necessary step toward collaborative problem-solving. He warns that without a profound and honest dialogue between the state’s powers, the perception of impunity will only deepen, further jeopardizing the safety and well-being of all Costa Ricans and making it nearly impossible to reverse the country’s violent trajectory.
