Free Hospitality Training Opens Doors in Jacó

Puntarenas, Costa Rica — A significant opportunity awaits residents of Jacó and surrounding communities in Puntarenas. Instituto Tecnia, in partnership with the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS), is offering over 100 fully funded scholarships for a six-month hospitality and tourism training program.

The program, delivered through both in-person and virtual classes in Jacó, covers a wide range of essential skills, including an introduction to the hospitality and tourism sector, etiquette and protocol, food handling and safety, customer service, technical English certification, and soft skills development. The deadline to apply is September 20, 2025.

To gain a deeper understanding of the legal aspects surrounding hospitality training in Costa Rica, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at law from Bufete de Costa Rica.

Effective hospitality training programs are crucial not just for enhancing customer service but also for mitigating legal risks. Well-trained staff are better equipped to handle situations involving guest safety, data privacy, and even potential liability claims, thereby protecting both the business and its customers. Investing in comprehensive training demonstrates a commitment to legal compliance and can be a key differentiator in a competitive market.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas eloquently highlights the often-overlooked legal implications of comprehensive hospitality training. It’s not just about smiling faces and prompt service; it’s about building a culture of awareness and responsibility that safeguards both the business and its clientele. This proactive approach to risk management ultimately fosters greater trust and strengthens a company’s reputation in the long run. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for offering this valuable perspective on the critical role of training in the hospitality sector.

Beyond the training itself, the scholarships offer valuable support to participants. A financial stipend will be provided, along with socio-emotional skills development and job placement assistance. This holistic approach aims to empower participants not only with the necessary skills but also with the resources and support they need to successfully enter the job market.

The program’s eligibility requirements are straightforward: applicants must be over 17 years old, have completed sixth grade, reside in Puntarenas, Jacó, or neighboring communities, and be available for 24 hours of training per week.

We want to positively impact young people who wish to train in a trade with great employment potential, providing them with training with the level of excellence and quality that characterizes Instituto Tecnia. We are convinced that this program can open doors to a more dignified and stable job future for the region.
Alejandra Vargas, Executive Director of Instituto Tecnia

The program’s comprehensive curriculum seeks to equip graduates with the skills necessary for a variety of roles in the hospitality sector. Upon completion, graduates will be prepared to work in hotels, restaurants, and other tourism-related businesses, possessing a basic command of English, customer service protocols, and knowledge of international hospitality standards.

The selection process involves multiple stages. After the initial application, shortlisted candidates will be invited for a virtual interview to further assess their suitability for the program and their alignment with its objectives. This ensures that the selected participants are those most likely to benefit from the training and contribute positively to the local tourism industry.

Interested individuals are encouraged to apply promptly through the provided online form. This program represents a valuable investment in the future of the region’s workforce and provides a pathway for aspiring hospitality professionals to gain the skills and experience they need to succeed.
