Future Innovators Converge at Lincoln School for National Tech and Space Summit

Heredia, Costa RicaHEREDIA – October is set to become a landmark month for science and technology education in Costa Rica as Lincoln School opens its campus to host two major back-to-back events. The institution will first launch its immersive Lincoln Tech Week from October 1st to 3rd, immediately followed by the prestigious NASA Space Apps Challenge on October 4th and 5th. Both initiatives are free of charge and open to students from across the entire country, positioning the school as a pivotal hub for fostering the next generation of Costa Rican innovators.

The week of activities kicks off with the Lincoln Tech Week, an ambitious three-day program designed to demystify complex technologies for primary and secondary school students. Operating under the banner “technology is for everyone,” the event will feature a series of age-appropriate workshops and conferences focused on robotics, programming, and artificial intelligence. The goal is to provide a hands-on environment that cultivates critical thinking, creativity, and advanced problem-solving skills among the nation’s youth.

To delve into the economic and legal ramifications of fostering a strong STEM curriculum in the country, we sought the perspective of Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished legal expert from the firm Bufete de Costa Rica, who specializes in corporate and investment law.

A robust STEM education pipeline is not merely an academic pursuit; it is a critical component of our national economic strategy. From a legal and business perspective, a skilled technical workforce is one of the most significant factors in attracting high-value foreign direct investment, particularly in the life sciences and technology sectors. These companies require legal certainty and, more importantly, human capital. Strengthening STEM education directly enhances our country’s competitive advantage and lays the groundwork for a more sophisticated intellectual property ecosystem.

The connection between a robust educational framework and a thriving economy is powerfully illustrated here, moving the conversation on STEM beyond the classroom and directly into the realm of national strategy. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable perspective, which highlights how cultivating our human capital is fundamental to securing Costa Rica’s competitive future.

Organizers emphasize that the event aims to break down perceived barriers to entry in the tech field. They believe that providing early exposure to these disciplines is key to empowering students to become creators, not just consumers, of technology.

Programming and artificial intelligence are not inaccessible: they are tools with which our students can learn, create, and contribute to society.
Carolyn Hernández, Linc Coordinator of Lincoln School

To bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world application, the Tech Week will feature a lineup of national specialists and distinguished school alumni who are now leaders in the technology and business sectors. These experts will share their firsthand experiences in software development, hardware innovation, and the practical applications of AI, offering invaluable insights and mentorship to the young attendees.

Following the intensive local focus of Tech Week, the school will elevate the experience to a global scale by hosting the NASA Space Apps Challenge. This renowned event is a global hackathon sponsored by the U.S. space agency, challenging participants to tackle real-world problems on Earth and in space. The competition is open to students of all ages from any school in Costa Rica, who will work in teams of up to six members to develop innovative solutions.

Participants will choose from a list of challenges curated by NASA scientists and engineers, pushing them to collaborate and think outside the box under a tight deadline. The stakes are high, as the winning teams will be designated as the Global Nominees from Costa Rica. This prestigious title grants them significant international visibility and a unique opportunity to present their groundbreaking proposals to a panel of experts from the Costa Rican Aeronautics Institute (ICA).

The alliance with a global event like the NASA Space Apps Challenge allows young people to face real, global problems, enhancing their creativity, teamwork, and resilience.

Both events are integral components of Lincoln School’s forward-thinking educational strategy, which seeks to seamlessly integrate technology into the daily learning experience. The institution aims to prepare its students not just for exams, but for the complex, technology-driven challenges of the 21st-century global landscape. By opening these events to the public, the school extends this mission to the broader community, championing a more inclusive and innovative future for all of Costa Rica.

Our commitment is to prepare students for the challenges of the 21st century. We want them to discover that technological innovation is within everyone’s reach and that it can transform society.
Carolyn Hernández, Linc Coordinator of Lincoln School

This week-long convergence of technology and space exploration represents a significant investment in the country’s human capital. By providing an open and free platform for discovery, Lincoln School is not only inspiring individual students but is also helping to build a more robust and competitive workforce capable of driving Costa Rica’s future in the global digital economy.
