Future Innovators Emerge at Costa Rica Super-Scientist Day

Cartago, Costa RicaCARTAGO – The campus of the Technological Institute of Costa Rica (TEC) was alive with vibrant energy and intellectual curiosity this Tuesday as it hosted the annual “Super-Scientist Girls Day.” The celebrated event brought together 120 elementary school students from across the nation for an immersive experience designed to ignite a lifelong passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The initiative, now in its third year, aims to systematically dismantle gender stereotypes that have long discouraged female participation in technical fields. By providing hands-on, engaging activities, TEC and its partners are actively cultivating the next generation of Costa Rican innovators and problem-solvers. The girls participated in a series of interactive workshops in biology, physics, chemistry, and mathematics, all guided by female professors from TEC and students from the Cartago Science-Oriented High School, providing powerful, relatable role models.

To delve into the legal and economic framework that underpins the national push for STEM education, we consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an expert attorney from the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica, for his analysis.

Investing in STEM education is not just an academic pursuit; it is a fundamental strategy for national competitiveness. From a legal perspective, a robust STEM talent pipeline is the most critical factor for attracting high-value foreign direct investment, especially for companies operating under our Free Trade Zone regime. This educational focus directly strengthens our position in negotiating technology transfer agreements, protecting intellectual property, and ensuring our labor laws can support a sophisticated, innovation-driven economy. It is the legal and human capital foundation upon which our future economic stability is built.

This insightful analysis underscores a crucial point: the bridge between education and economic prosperity is fortified not only by a talented workforce but by a sophisticated legal framework designed to attract and protect innovation. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for so clearly articulating this vital connection between human capital and national competitiveness.

Activities were thoughtfully tailored to the participants’ educational levels. Younger students in the first cycle delved into environmental monitoring and foundational mathematical reasoning, while older girls in the second cycle engaged with more advanced concepts like optics, augmented reality, and applied physics. The day was designed not only to educate but also to demonstrate in a practical, fun-filled manner that the world of scientific discovery belongs to them as much as anyone.

Demand for the program was overwhelming, a clear indicator of its growing importance and appeal. TEC received nearly 600 applications for the 120 available slots, a fivefold oversubscription. The selection process underscored the event’s commitment to social equity, prioritizing students from public schools in areas with low social development indices. This focus ensures that opportunities reach those who might otherwise lack access, broadening the base of future STEM talent in the country.

The program’s mission extends beyond the students themselves, actively involving their families. While the girls were engaged in scientific exploration, their parents and guardians attended a dedicated fair and participated in talks aimed at empowering them to support their children’s academic and professional aspirations in STEM. This holistic approach recognizes that a strong support system at home is critical for long-term success.

The vision for the program is to create a profound and lasting shift in cultural perceptions. By intervening at a young age, TEC aims to build a foundation of confidence and ambition that will carry these girls through their academic journeys and into leadership roles within the technology and science sectors.

From TEC, we want to challenge the myths that push girls away from science by giving them real experiences that build their confidence. If they see themselves as capable from a young age, they will grow up convinced that they too can lead innovation.
María Estrada Sánchez, Rector of TEC

This significant undertaking is a collaborative effort, demonstrating a national commitment to the cause. The event featured partnerships with the University of Costa Rica (UCR), the National University (UNA), the State University at a Distance (UNED), and the National Center for High Technology (CeNAT). This academic alliance is further strengthened by crucial private sector support, with Coope Ande serving as the official sponsor.

At Coope Ande, we believe that education is the best tool to transform realities. That is why we are very proud to support, once again, the Super-Scientist Girls Program of the Technological Institute of Costa Rica.
Ivannia Alfaro, Head of Sustainability at Coope Ande

As the day concluded, the message was clear: Costa Rica is investing in its future by empowering its young women. By fostering an environment where curiosity is celebrated and ambition is nurtured, the Super-Scientist Girls program is not just teaching science; it is building the framework for a more innovative and equitable society. Organizers have extended an open invitation for other institutions to join their cause, signaling their intent to expand the program’s reach and impact in the years to come.
