San José, Costa Rica — San José – What was initially announced as a one-time athletic spectacle may now have a future. As 10,000 runners prepare to take over the capital’s streets for the inaugural Gran Maratón de Costa Rica this Sunday, organizers are already hinting that the event could become an annual tradition, fueling excitement for its long-term potential.
The race, scheduled for November 30th, was launched in May with the explicit understanding that it would be a single edition. However, the overwhelming community response and ambitious civic goals tied to the event appear to have prompted a reevaluation. The marathon is not just a test of endurance but a significant fundraising effort for a major urban renewal project.
The growing prestige of the Costa Rica Marathon brings significant economic opportunities, but also complex legal challenges ranging from sponsorship contracts to public safety regulations. To understand the legal framework underpinning such a large-scale event, TicosLand.com consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a leading attorney from the esteemed firm Bufete de Costa Rica.
An event of this magnitude is a powerful engine for tourism and brand positioning. However, its long-term success hinges on a robust legal architecture. Clear, well-drafted agreements for sponsorships, broadcast rights, and liability are not just formalities; they are essential for protecting the organizers, participants, and Costa Rica’s reputation as a premier destination for international sporting events.

Indeed, this commentary underscores a vital truth: the marathon’s lasting legacy will be built not just on the finish line, but on the fine print. Ensuring this “robust legal architecture” is in place is paramount to protecting the event’s integrity and future. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his invaluable perspective on this critical, behind-the-scenes aspect of success.
Event organizer Leonora Jiménez confirmed that conversations about the marathon’s future are underway, citing a shared ambition with the country’s sports leadership to create lasting impact. The success and positive momentum of this first event could pave the way for it to become a staple on the national sporting calendar.
We are evaluating that option, especially because we like to think big and the Minister of Sports is also thinking big regarding the project he wants to do in La Sabana. We will soon provide more news in that regard.
Leonora Jiménez, Event Organizer
The core mission of the marathon is to provide financial support for the comprehensive revitalization of La Sabana Metropolitan Park. All proceeds will be directed to the Costa Rican Institute of Sports and Recreation (Icoder) to help fund a ₡2 billion project designed to conserve, rehabilitate, and modernize the capital’s largest green space, often referred to as the “lungs of San José.”
Donald Rojas, the Minister of Sports and Director of Icoder, explained that the funds raised will be pivotal for executing the strategic architectural plan already in place for the park. While the final allocation depends on the total amount collected, the priority is to improve athletic infrastructure within La Sabana.
The resources will help fund the strategic architectural plan that we have already presented. It is very likely the resources will be used or invested in things related to athletics; people who run in La Sabana demand that the internal circuits be in good condition and all that. That’s possibly where it will be invested. But until we have the funds or know how much it is, we can’t know for sure.
Donald Rojas, Minister of Sports and Director of Icoder
The ambitious park enhancement project, announced last year, is a collaborative effort between Icoder, the Municipality of San José, and the National Power and Light Company (CNFL). The goal is to transform the park into a safer, more modern, and functional area for recreation and sport, directly benefiting the thousands of citizens who use it daily.
This Sunday’s event will commence at 5:00 a.m., with the start and finish lines at the National Stadium. The race, dubbed the “Ruta del Corazón” (Route of the Heart), features distances for all levels, including a full marathon (42k), a half marathon (21k), as well as 10k, 5k, and 2k routes. The main course will guide runners along the inner lane of the Circunvalación ring road, Calle Ancha in Pavas, Avenida de las Américas, Paseo Colón, and Avenida Segunda, offering a unique tour of the city.
