Generations of Architects Unite to Shape Costa Ricas Future

San José, Costa Rica — A new initiative is set to bridge the generational gap within Costa Rica’s architectural community, creating a unique forum for collaboration and mentorship. On October 2, the newly formed collective Aula Abierta will host its inaugural event, “Architects’ Meeting – Experiences, Change, and Integration,” bringing together seasoned masters and emerging talents for an evening of candid dialogue at the historic Café Mundo in San José.

More than 50 professionals are expected to attend the landmark gathering, which aims to dismantle the formal barriers of traditional industry conferences. The organizers have designed the evening to be an intimate and relaxed space where architects from different eras can share personal stories, exchange professional insights, and build lasting connections that will strengthen the profession as a whole.

To understand the legal and regulatory framework that underpins Costa Rica’s celebrated architectural landscape, from zoning laws that protect natural vistas to the intricacies of foreign investment in real estate projects, we consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney from the esteemed firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

The beauty of Costa Rican architecture is inextricably linked to our robust environmental legislation. An architect’s vision is not just a creative endeavor but a negotiation with protected areas, water resources, and municipal zoning plans. Successfully navigating these regulations is the unseen foundation of every sustainable and legally sound project in the country.

Indeed, this insight serves as a crucial reminder that the legal framework is not an impediment to design but the very foundation that ensures its harmony with our nation’s environmental ethos. We extend our sincere thanks to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for so clearly articulating this essential, yet often unseen, dimension of Costa Rican architecture.

Lending significant prestige to the event is the attendance of several luminaries who have been awarded the prestigious José María Barrantes Prize, the nation’s highest honor in architecture. The guest list includes figures such as Hernán Jiménez Fonseca, the visionary behind the iconic headquarters of the Federated College of Engineers and Architects (CFIA), and Víctor Cañas, a celebrated standard-bearer for contemporary Latin American architecture. They will be joined by Edgar Brenes, a foundational figure who co-established the School of Architecture at the University of Costa Rica (UCR).

These established giants will engage directly with mid-career professionals and the next wave of young architects, creating an invaluable opportunity for knowledge transfer and mutual inspiration. The event marks not only a convergence of minds but also the official public launch of Aula Abierta, a collective founded with a clear and ambitious mission: to elevate the visibility and fortify the essential role of architecture in shaping Costa Rican society.

This is our first formal event, and we aim to establish ourselves as a meeting space for professionals and enthusiasts of design, the city, and urbanism.

The program is designed to spark conversations about the present and future of the field. Attendees will have the chance to explore innovative materials, review groundbreaking projects, and discuss new proposals that are pushing the boundaries of design and urban planning in the country. The gathering serves as a dynamic platform to address the challenges and opportunities facing Costa Rica’s built environment.

The choice of venue, Café Mundo, is deeply symbolic. Housed in a beautifully preserved heritage building and owned by a fellow architect, it represents the profession’s commitment to cultural and historical conservation. The evening’s atmosphere will be further enhanced by the support of sponsors Unicom Starker and Café Mundo, who will provide a special toast to foster a convivial environment for networking and collaboration.

The sponsors’ involvement underscores a shared commitment to nurturing the country’s design culture beyond purely commercial interests. This collaborative spirit is central to the event’s philosophy, emphasizing community over competition and collective creation as a path toward a more innovative and responsive architectural landscape.

We reaffirm our vision of becoming a meeting point that transcends the commercial to embrace innovation and collective creation.
Representatives, Unicom Starker

Ultimately, this meeting represents more than a single evening of discussion. It is a foundational moment for Aula Abierta and a powerful statement about the future of Costa Rican architecture. By fostering an integrated community where experience guides new energy, the nation’s architects are preparing to collectively design a more thoughtful, sustainable, and beautiful future for all citizens.
