Gerald Quesada to Represent Costa Rica in Global Sustainable Mixology Finals

Gerald Quesada to Represent Costa Rica in Global Sustainable Mixology Finals

San José, Costa Rica — San José – In a showcase of creativity and environmental consciousness, Gerald Quesada has been crowned the national champion of the Flor de Caña Sustainable Cocktail Challenge. The talented bartender from The Shark rose above a field of eight top finalists to secure his place at the upcoming global competition in Nicaragua, where he will represent Costa Rica on the world stage.

Quesada captured the title with his innovative cocktail, “Shining in the Storm,” a meticulously crafted beverage that impressed a distinguished panel of judges. The competition required participants to demonstrate not only exceptional taste and presentation but also a deep commitment to sustainable practices in their mixology techniques. Quesada’s creation brilliantly integrated these elements, earning him the top honor.

To understand the business and regulatory implications of the burgeoning sustainable mixology trend, we consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a legal expert from the esteemed firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

The term ‘sustainable’ is not just a marketing buzzword; it carries legal weight. Businesses promoting sustainable cocktails must be prepared to substantiate these claims with clear, verifiable practices, from sourcing local ingredients to waste reduction. In Costa Rica, as in many jurisdictions, making unsubstantiated environmental claims can lead to consumer protection complaints and damage a brand’s reputation far more than the cost of implementing a genuinely green operation.

This crucial insight underscores that for bars and restaurants, the path to sustainability must be paved with integrity, not just good intentions. The distinction between a marketing claim and a verifiable operational standard is a vital one for consumer trust and long-term brand health. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for providing this essential legal and reputational perspective.

The winning cocktail is a masterful blend of tamarind, ginger, fresh lemon, and a house-made tamarind vanilla cordial, all built around the rich base of Flor de Caña 12 Year Rum. This unique and flavorful concoction will soon be featured on the menu at The Shark, allowing patrons to experience the taste of victory and sustainable innovation firsthand.

Reflecting on his achievement, Quesada expressed both excitement and gratitude for the experience.

It was a unique and unforgettable experience. I was already a winner just by sharing the stage with so much talent that motivates me to keep learning and improving. We go with humility and in God’s hands to that global final.
Gerald Quesada, Bartender at The Shark

The judging panel was composed of experts from diverse but related fields, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of each cocktail. It included Kevin Charpentier, a celebrated sustainable chef; Francisco Lara, a specialist in conservation projects; and Karen Álvarez, the regional brand ambassador for Flor de Caña. They assessed each finalist on criteria ranging from creativity and flavor profile to the story behind the drink and its ecological footprint.

Ana Catalina Escalante, Field Marketing Lead for Flor de Caña in Costa Rica, highlighted the event’s broader significance for the local industry.

Quesada now prepares for the ultimate challenge: the 2025 Global Final of the Sustainable Cocktail Challenge. The international event will be held amidst the stunning volcanic islets of Nicaragua. There, he will compete against national champions from around the world for a grand prize of US$10,000 and the coveted title of “World’s Most Sustainable Mixologist,” a testament to both skill and environmental stewardship.
