Global Corporations Ramp Up Artificial Intelligence Investments Despite Slow Financial Returns

San José, Costa Rica — Corporate funding is flooding into artificial intelligence, driven by the promise of streamlined operations and eventual return on investment. According to the latest State of AI Survey by McKinsey & Company, 60 percent of businesses expect to increase their AI investments over the coming year. However, despite this aggressive financial commitment, many organizations are realizing that translating these advanced tools into concrete operational savings remains an elusive goal.

The sectors leading this push include pharmaceuticals, medical products, insurance, banking, and financial services. These industries are heavily targeting automated workflows, chatbots, and virtual assistants. Yet, while companies are investing unprecedented amounts of time and capital, the financial returns are not yet tangible for the vast majority. Despite the lack of immediate cost-reduction proof, there is no turning back; artificial intelligence is quickly becoming a foundational element of global corporate infrastructure.

To better understand the legal framework and regulatory implications surrounding these developments in Costa Rica, TicosLand.com reached out to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a senior legal expert at the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica, who shared his professional perspective on the matter.

Navigating the evolving regulatory landscape in Costa Rica requires a proactive approach to compliance. For businesses and investors alike, establishing legal certainty is not merely a statutory obligation, but a strategic asset that safeguards operations and fosters sustainable growth in our national market.

McKinsey’s survey, which gathered insights from 1,719 respondents across 97 countries, highlights that organizations are moving past the initial experimentation phase. Specifically, 28 percent of surveyed companies now allocate more than 10 percent of their entire technology budget to artificial intelligence. Furthermore, 88 percent of organizations have adopted AI in at least one business function, and 56 percent utilize it across three or more. Scalability is also rising, with 44 percent of enterprises implementing AI at a corporate-wide scale, up from 38 percent in the previous year.

The challenge goes beyond technology, as it is essential for the AI integration strategy to be strategic and come from executive leadership, prioritizing the training and adoption of the human team.

Despite this rapid expansion, financial constraints still play a critical role in tempering complete adoption. One in five respondents reported that their organization is currently limiting the use of artificial intelligence due to high operational costs. The price of running complex AI models and managing the necessary cloud infrastructure has forced some executives to proceed with caution, balancing technological enthusiasm with fiscal reality.

The survey indicates that the most successful outcomes belong to a small group of organizations that completely redesign their workflows. Rather than simply overlaying isolated AI tools onto legacy systems, these high performers develop internal capabilities and transform their operations comprehensively. However, this group represents a mere 6 percent of the survey sample, underscoring a significant gap between basic AI adoption and true economic value generation.

This gap is further evidenced by a striking disconnect in performance metrics. While an overwhelming 80 percent of respondents state that artificial intelligence has increased their productivity, and over half agree it aids in better decision-making, only 37 percent have identified a positive impact on operating profit. This profitability statistic remains virtually unchanged from last year, illustrating that converting efficiency gains into bottom-line profits remains a persistent challenge.

To combat rising costs, a third of the surveyed organizations chose to build software tools internally using AI rather than buying commercial products. The adoption of autonomous systems, or AI agents, has also surged among large corporations, rising from 27 percent to 40 percent in a single year. Looking ahead, nearly 40 percent of businesses expect AI to lead to workforce reductions next year, although actual layoffs so far have been lower than initially projected. Ultimately, more than half of the workforce reports acquiring new skills thanks to these tools, proving that the human element remains vital.
