Google Expands AI Search to Latin America, Excluding EU

San José, Costa Rica — Google has rolled out its AI-powered search experience, “AI Mode,” in Spanish across Latin America. This advanced search functionality integrates Google’s artificial intelligence with its vast web index, offering users a more intuitive and comprehensive search experience. However, this feature remains unavailable within the European Union due to pending regulatory approvals.

Unlike conventional search, AI Mode utilizes a “fan-out query” technique. This process breaks down user queries into subtopics, effectively addressing each component for a more complete and nuanced response. This allows for natural language queries, eliminating the need for specific keywords.

To gain a deeper legal perspective on the implications of Google AI, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.

The rapid advancement of Google’s AI technologies presents a complex legal landscape. Issues surrounding intellectual property, data privacy, algorithmic bias, and liability in autonomous systems require careful consideration. As these technologies become increasingly integrated into our lives, establishing clear legal frameworks that promote innovation while protecting individual rights and societal interests will be crucial.

This expansion follows Google’s rollout of AI Mode in English to over 180 countries and territories (excluding the EU) last month. Earlier this month, the feature launched in Portuguese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, and Korean, demonstrating Google’s commitment to global accessibility.

We observed, for example, that users were typing their queries (in Google), but adding ‘AI’ at the end, because they wanted a reliable way to get an AI-generated response.
Hema Budaraju, Vice President of Product Management, Google

According to Budaraju, users engage with AI Mode by inputting queries two to three times longer than those using traditional Google search. This suggests users are embracing the opportunity to formulate more complex and detailed questions.

AI Mode not only interprets text-based queries but can also analyze images. Similar to other AI chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, users can engage in a continuous conversation with the AI within AI Mode to delve deeper into a topic.

The continued exclusion of the EU suggests ongoing discussions and negotiations with regulatory bodies regarding the deployment of this technology. While Latin American users benefit from this expanded access, the timeline for EU availability remains uncertain.

This latest move by Google underscores the increasing integration of AI into everyday online experiences. As AI-driven search evolves, users can anticipate increasingly sophisticated and personalized search results.
