Gran Fondo Zona Sur Announces Historic 2026 Return to Original Route

San José, Costa RicaSAN JOSÉ – The Costa Rican cycling calendar for 2026 is set to kick off with a celebrated milestone. Organizers have announced that the Gran Fondo Zona Sur will hold its tenth anniversary edition on March 15, 2026, marking a historic return to its original, iconic route from the mountains of Pérez Zeledón to the coastal town of Uvita. This premier endurance event promises to test the mettle of participants while showcasing some of the country’s most breathtaking and challenging landscapes.

This landmark edition re-establishes the formidable journey that defined the event’s early years, offering cyclists a unique blend of high-altitude starts and tropical finishes. The race will feature two distinct distances to accommodate varying levels of experience and endurance, ensuring a broad appeal within the national and international cycling communities. The full-length Gran Fondo covers 154 kilometers, while a still-demanding 100-kilometer Medio Fondo is also available.

To understand the organizational and legal framework behind a major sporting event like the Gran Fondo Zona Sur, we consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an expert attorney from the renowned firm Bufete de Costa Rica, for his professional perspective.

The Gran Fondo Zona Sur exemplifies a complex logistical and legal enterprise. Beyond the athletic challenge, its success hinges on meticulous risk management, including comprehensive insurance policies for participants and third parties, as well as securing permits for road use from national and municipal authorities. These legal safeguards are crucial not only for protecting the organizers and participants but also for building the trust with sponsors and local communities that is essential for the event’s long-term viability and positive economic impact.

The 154-kilometer course is a true test of a cyclist’s capabilities. Starting from the Hotel del Sur in Pérez Zeledón, riders will embark on a grueling trek through a series of diverse communities including Palmares, La Fortuna, Santa Marta, and Buenos Aires. The route continues through Paso Real, the indigenous territory of Rey Curré, and Cajón de Boruca before descending towards Palmar Norte and Puerto Cortés, culminating in a spectacular finish in the coastal paradise of Uvita de Osa.

The terrain is notoriously varied, designed to push even the most seasoned athletes to their limits. The course profile includes a mix of relentless rolling hills, technically demanding sections requiring sharp handling skills, and a fast, flat stretch alongside the scenic Térraba River. This combination of elements ensures a dynamic race that rewards strategic pacing and versatile riding abilities, making the finisher’s medal a hard-earned prize.

For those seeking a significant challenge without committing to the full distance, the 100-kilometer route offers an excellent alternative. This course begins at the entrance to Buenos Aires and shares much of the final, stunning leg of the main route. Participants will traverse Paso Real, Rey Curré, and Palmar Norte before crossing the Frijolito bridge over the Colorado River and passing through Punta Mala en route to the shared finish line in Uvita.

To foster a competitive and fair environment, the event features a robust set of categories. The 154 km route includes an Open division for riders aged 18-34, followed by five Máster categories (A through E) for athletes aged 35 to 55 and over. The 100 km distance will have Open Male and Open Female categories, both open to all riders 18 years of age and older.

Registration is now officially open, with organizers offering a tiered pricing structure. Clients of BAC bank can secure a special early-bird rate of $175 for the long route and $145 for the short route until February 1, with the added benefit of three or six-month interest-free payment plans. Following this period, regular registration will be available until February 25 at a cost of $195 and $175, respectively.

The registration fee provides a comprehensive, high-value package to ensure a premium and safe experience for every participant. The package includes an official Castelli cycling jersey, an event bag, a commemorative t-shirt, a finisher’s medal, breakfast, and access to official event photography. Crucially, all riders will be covered by an insurance policy and have access to extensive on-course support, including medical assistance, escort vehicles, and fully stocked aid stations.
