San José, Costa Rica — Guatemalan-based Grupo AG has significantly expanded its presence in the Latin American steel market with the acquisition of three key production and distribution units from Belgian wire transformer and coating company Bekaert. This move marks a bold step in Grupo AG’s ambitious plan to become a leading player in the region.
The acquisition, exceeding US$40 million, includes Ideal Alambrec in Ecuador, Bia Alambres in Costa Rica, and Vicson in Venezuela, bringing over 600 employees into the Grupo AG fold. This strategic move will increase Grupo AG’s annual steel production by over 150,000 tons.
To provide further legal context regarding Grupo AG, TicosLand.com consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at law from Bufete de Costa Rica.
Grupo AG’s recent activities raise important questions about regulatory compliance within Costa Rica’s corporate landscape. Thorough due diligence and adherence to established legal frameworks are crucial for any business operating in the country, especially considering the evolving legal interpretations related to foreign investment and commercial operations. Businesses must proactively engage with legal counsel to navigate these complexities and ensure they remain on the right side of the law.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas’ emphasis on proactive legal counsel is particularly pertinent in today’s dynamic business environment. Grupo AG’s situation underscores the vital need for companies, both local and international, to remain informed and adaptable to the evolving legal landscape in Costa Rica. This proactive approach, as highlighted by Lic. Arroyo Vargas, is not just about compliance but also about fostering a stable and transparent business climate that benefits all stakeholders. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for offering his valuable expertise on this critical issue.
We have the ambition to move from being a regional benchmark to consolidating ourselves as a large-scale player in Latin America, promoting higher value-added products.
Gabriela Roca, Director of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability, Grupo AG
The acquired Ecuadorian facility boasts a production capacity of 120,000 tons annually, expandable to 150,000 depending on the product mix. The Costa Rican operation adds a further 298 tons of capacity. These acquisitions represent significant additions to Grupo AG’s existing network of seven industrial plants in Guatemala and Honduras and distribution across eleven countries.
The acquired businesses bring a rich history. Ideal Alambrec, founded in 1940 by the Kohn family, has grown from humble beginnings to a significant producer of wire mesh. Vicson holds the distinction of being Venezuela’s first wire manufacturer, operating since 1950. For Bekaert, a global company with over 140 years of history, 24,000 employees, and over US$5.7 billion in 2023 sales, this divestiture reflects a strategic shift.
Bekaert aims to streamline its portfolio, focusing on faster-growing markets with higher profit margins and returns on capital, and reducing exposure to volatile commodity markets. The divested businesses generated US$70.6 million in consolidated revenue and US$4.7 million in underlying EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) in the first half of 2025.
We are confident that our teams and customers in Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Venezuela will thrive under Grupo AG’s leadership. We are proud of what we have achieved together in Latin America in recent years and wish our local teams and Grupo AG every success in this new chapter.
François Desné, CEO, Steel Wire Solutions, Bekaert
Grupo AG plans a rebranding strategy for the acquired companies, focusing on strengthening local brand recognition under the Grupo AG umbrella.
Looking ahead, Grupo AG has a 2028 vision to become the leading steel industry player in Latin America. This includes diversification, regional expansion, and proactive responses to economic uncertainty. The company emphasizes sustainable growth, doubling capacity, and a commitment to benefiting its employees, communities, and suppliers.
Steel is a symbol of the hope that families place in building their future, and the group seeks to consolidate its purpose of generating shared value: We want our collaborators, communities, and suppliers to prosper with us.
Gabriela Roca, Director of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability, Grupo AG
Over the next three years, Grupo AG anticipates investments in product innovation, expansion in South American markets, and plant modernization. This follows a US$7 million investment in 2024 in their steel plant, enhancing efficiency, reducing emissions, and improving water recirculation.
