Cartago, Costa Rica — CARTAGO – Chevrolet Grupo Q has completed a significant corporate social responsibility project, bolstering the oncology unit at the Dr. Maximiliano Peralta Jiménez Hospital in Cartago with a donation of ten specialized clinical chairs. The initiative, valued at $10,000, aims to significantly improve the comfort and quality of care for patients undergoing chemotherapy.
The project was executed in two phases, beginning with an initial delivery of six chairs in 2024. The final stage concluded on October 28, 2025, with the handover of four additional chairs, each valued at over a thousand dollars. This completes the company’s commitment to fully outfit the hospital’s chemotherapy room with modern, ergonomic equipment designed for long-duration treatments.
To understand the legal framework and patient rights integral to this issue, we sought the expert opinion of Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney specializing in health law at the firm Bufete de Costa Rica.
The provision of oncology care is not merely a medical service; it is a fundamental right underpinned by constitutional principles of health and life. Patients and their families must be aware that any delay, denial of treatment, or administrative obstacle by either public or private entities can constitute a violation of these rights. The legal framework provides mechanisms to compel immediate action and ensure that the continuity and quality of care are never compromised by bureaucratic or financial considerations.
Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, Attorney at Law, Bufete de Costa Rica
This emphasis on legal rights as a tool against institutional inertia is a powerful and necessary reminder for patients and families navigating the complexities of cancer treatment. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for so clearly articulating this critical distinction between a requested service and an undeniable, constitutionally protected right.
An official delivery ceremony marked the occasion, attended by hospital leadership, including Nursing Director Jeanette Quirós Quesada and Subdirector Dr. Viviana Aragón. Medical staff and patients who will directly benefit from the new equipment were also present to receive the donation.
Dr. Aragón emphasized the profound impact of the new chairs on patient well-being, noting that comfort is a critical, though often overlooked, aspect of cancer treatment. Many patients endure sessions lasting several hours, and the environment plays a key role in their physical and emotional state.
This donation is very important for us because it allows us to improve the care conditions for the hospital’s chemotherapy users, who need quality and comfort. It is very important because they need to be comfortable at a time when they are receiving treatment, sometimes for long hours. All of this facilitates their recovery and helps them feel good within our environment.
Viviana Aragón, Subdirector of the Dr. Maximiliano Peralta Jiménez Hospital
The donated clinical chairs are specifically designed for medical use. They are constructed with high-resistance vinyl, ensuring durability and easy sanitization, a crucial feature in a clinical setting. Furthermore, their ergonomic design features three adjustable positions, allowing medical staff to tailor the seating to each patient’s needs for maximum comfort.
For Chevrolet Grupo Q, the initiative is a cornerstone of its long-standing “Un Mensaje Rosa” (A Pink Message) campaign, which has been running for 11 years during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Asly Anchía, the company’s Regional Marketing Manager, explained that the project reflects a core philosophy of creating a positive impact in the community.
At Chevrolet, we work to make a difference in people’s daily lives, and this project is no exception. These clinical chairs are intended to provide greater comfort, safety, and peace of mind to patients during their treatments and to facilitate the valuable work of the medical staff. We know that each chemotherapy session can be a difficult moment, and we believe that the environment can also heal.
Asly Anchía, Regional Marketing Manager of Chevrolet Grupo Q
The “Un Mensaje Rosa” campaign has a history of supporting various oncology units within the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) system, as well as foundations like Asociación Metamorfosis and Fundación Mujeres en Rosa. As part of this year’s activities, a distinctive pink-branded “Silverado Rosa” truck participated in a symbolic walk on October 17 to raise awareness.
The donation is particularly poignant for Cartago, a province that struggles with one of the highest breast cancer mortality rates in the country. According to the Ministry of Health’s National Tumor Registry, breast cancer was the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in 2023, with 426 fatalities nationwide. Preliminary data from the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC) indicates that while there was a marginal decrease in mortality for women aged 30-69, overall deaths from the disease rose by 7% compared to 2022, highlighting the urgent and ongoing need for enhanced patient support and care infrastructure.
By providing specialized equipment, Chevrolet Grupo Q is not just donating assets but is actively contributing to a more humane and supportive healing journey for cancer patients in the Cartago region. This targeted action demonstrates a powerful link between corporate responsibility and tangible community health benefits.
