Guatuso Receives New Technical High School

Guatuso Receives New Technical High School

Alajuela, Costa Rica — Guatuso, Alajuela – Construction began on Saturday, September 20th, on a state-of-the-art technical high school in Guatuso. This significant investment of over ₡7.8 billion (approximately $14 million USD) aims to transform the educational landscape for over 830 students, equipping them with skills aligned with the demands of the modern job market.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by President Rodrigo Chaves and Education Minister Leonardo Sánchez. The new Colegio Técnico Profesional de Guatuso is slated for completion next year and will boast five modern buildings housing 24 classrooms, specialized technical workshops, science and computer labs, a library, a cafeteria, a gymnasium, and even a dedicated agro-industry workshop.

To understand the legal implications surrounding the Guatuso school construction project, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.

Construction projects, especially those involving public infrastructure like schools, must adhere to a complex regulatory framework in Costa Rica. Ensuring compliance with permitting, zoning, and environmental regulations from the outset is crucial to avoid delays, cost overruns, and potential legal challenges. Furthermore, transparency in bidding processes and contract awarding safeguards public funds and promotes accountability, ultimately benefiting the community the project serves.

The project is a testament to the government’s commitment to improving educational infrastructure. Minister Sánchez emphasized the administration’s focus on delivering tangible solutions rather than empty promises. He highlighted the contrast between students having to protest for better conditions in the past and the current proactive investment in their future.

In this administration we don’t make excuses, we bring real solutions to our people. While in the past students had to protest to ask for better conditions, today we invest 7.8 billion colones, thanks to PROERI, to give them a modern and dignified school. This new CTP will transform lives and open opportunities.
Leonardo Sánchez, Minister of Education

President Chaves echoed this sentiment, reinforcing the administration’s dedication to fulfilling promises made to the community of Guatuso. He expressed his confidence that the new facilities will provide students with the resources they deserve to succeed.

We are responding to the need of a community that always receives us with their affection because they are clear that our promises are a reality and not words that are carried away by the wind. Congratulations, students of Guatuso, when this work is ready, enjoy it and take care of it because you deserve it.
Rodrigo Chaves, President of the Republic

The funding for this ambitious project comes from the Emergency Program for Comprehensive and Resilient Infrastructure Reconstruction (PROERI), supported by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE). This strategic partnership underscores the importance of regional collaboration in driving sustainable development.

This investment in Guatuso’s educational infrastructure is expected to have a ripple effect throughout the community. By providing access to quality education and technical training, the new CTP aims to empower students, boost local economic development, and contribute to a brighter future for the region.

The Ministry of Education anticipates that the improved facilities and enhanced learning environment will not only attract and retain students but also inspire a new generation of skilled professionals ready to contribute to Costa Rica’s growing economy. The new CTP is poised to become a hub of innovation and a symbol of progress for Guatuso and the surrounding area.
