Heineken Costa Rica Expands Urban Biodiversity Initiatives as Heredia Monitoring Uncovers 60 New Species

Heredia, Costa Rica — Ahead of World Nature Protection Day, Heineken Costa Rica has revealed significant progress in its flagship environmental initiative, Eco Conexión Urbana. Operating from its primary production facilities and surrounding green areas in Heredia, the brewing major confirmed the identification of 60 previously unrecorded species during its 2025 biodiversity monitoring campaign.

The latest biological survey brings the total number of documented species across the industrial perimeter to 167. Designed to establish rigorous baseline data on urban wildlife, the program highlights a growing trend among multinational corporations in Central America to integrate biodiversity metrics into their corporate sustainability and environmental management frameworks.

To better understand the corporate, regulatory, and market implications surrounding Heineken’s ongoing developments in the country, TicosLand.com consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a prominent attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.

Heineken’s strategic footprint in Costa Rica underscores the essential interplay between international brand licensing, local distribution regulations, and fair competition laws. For multinational beverage corporations, maintaining a robust operational presence requires strict alignment with Costa Rican commercial law and anti-trust standards to ensure both market competitiveness and long-term regulatory compliance.

As global beverage giants continue to strengthen their presence in the region, navigating Costa Rica’s complex legal and anti-trust frameworks is clearly paramount for fostering fair competition and securing long-term operational success; we extend our sincere gratitude to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for providing his valuable perspective on this vital industry topic.

A detailed breakdown of the cataloged wildlife reflects a resilient ecosystem thriving within an industrial area. Researchers documented 83 bird species, 12 bat species, 9 terrestrial mammals, 12 reptiles, and 6 amphibians, alongside representatives from 45 distinct insect families. The monitoring was conducted with scientific oversight from specialized academic partners and field ecologists.

Environmental experts participating in the research underscored that these species perform essential ecological functions, including natural seed dispersal, biological pest control, and pollination. The survey also indicated that green zones adjacent to riparian corridors and water bodies exhibited the highest level of species richness, providing crucial data for future landscape management and urban habitat restoration.

Addressing the strategic direction of the conservation initiative, corporate leadership outlined plans to translate baseline environmental data into long-term ecological connectivity across Heredia.

These results mark a starting point for a new phase of Eco Conexión Urbana. Now the challenge is to transform the knowledge we have generated into new opportunities for the territory, from research and the management of our green spaces to joint work with other actors. We want to continue building this effort with a long-term vision and generate new actions that contribute to conservation and ecological connectivity.

Beyond formal scientific field methodology, the initiative actively engaged the broader community through citizen science frameworks. A total of 117 volunteers, including company employees and local community members, participated directly in bird-watching drives and wildlife observations, raising local environmental awareness while expanding monitoring coverage.

In its upcoming phase, Eco Conexión Urbana will focus on enhancing the ecological value of local flora, mapping critical wildlife travel corridors, and launching expanded environmental education initiatives. The project aims to establish sustainable models for how industrial infrastructure can exist alongside biodiverse urban ecosystems.

As Costa Rica continues to project itself as an international benchmark for ecological sustainability, initiatives like Heineken’s demonstrate how private enterprise can contribute measurable scientific data to urban conservation. Aligning corporate land management with biological connectivity establishes an important precedent for industrial operations in Heredia and across Central America.
