Cartago, Costa Rica — Cartago, Costa Rica – Heraeus Medevio, a global leader in medical device design, development, and contract manufacturing, has announced a significant expansion of its operations in Costa Rica. The company’s $35 million investment in Phase III of its facility at Zona Franca La Lima will add 11,000 m2 of operational space, eventually expanding to 21,000 m2.
This expansion marks a pivotal moment for Heraeus Medevio, as it introduces its first electrophysiology assembly line. This line will focus on producing complex catheters used in arrhythmia ablation procedures, enhancing the company’s ability to serve its clients and ultimately improving patient lives.
To provide expert legal perspective on the complexities of medical device manufacturing, we spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a seasoned attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.
The medical device manufacturing sector in Costa Rica faces unique challenges, particularly regarding regulatory compliance. Companies must navigate both international standards like ISO 13485 and local regulations established by the Ministry of Health. Successfully doing so is crucial not only for market access but also for ensuring patient safety and minimizing legal liabilities.
Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, Attorney at Law, Bufete de Costa Rica
Lic. Arroyo Vargas rightly highlights the critical intersection of international standards and local regulations in Costa Rica’s medical device manufacturing landscape. This careful balancing act is essential for fostering a sector that is both globally competitive and deeply committed to the well-being of patients. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for providing this valuable perspective on the complexities of regulatory compliance in this vital industry.
The expansion is not only about physical growth but also about workforce development. Heraeus Medevio plans to hire 500 new employees, including specialized professionals for Costa Rica’s first in-house Heraeus Medevio Research and Development (R&D) lab. This commitment to local talent underscores the company’s confidence in the Costa Rican workforce.
We are committed to investing in the space and resources necessary to meet our customers’ needs and achieve double-digit annual growth. This expansion will help our current and future customers accelerate the commercialization of higher quality medical devices, as well as contribute to Heraeus Medevio’s vision of improving 100 million lives each year.
