Heredia University Prepares to Unveil 90 Student Startups

Heredia, Costa RicaHeredia – The next wave of Costa Rican innovation is set to be unveiled this Saturday, December 6th, as Universidad Hispanoamericana (UH) hosts its tenth annual Business Projects Fair. The event will showcase 90 distinct ventures developed by students from the university’s Economic Sciences, Business Administration, and Public Accounting programs, offering a tangible glimpse into the future of the nation’s entrepreneurial landscape.

Held at the university’s Heredia campus near the Paseo de las Flores mall, the fair will be open to the public from 7:30 a.m. until noon. This showcase provides a critical platform for aspiring entrepreneurs to present their ideas to the community and potential investors. The projects span a diverse range of sectors, including cutting-edge solutions in health, technology, food and beverage, professional services, and the growing market for pet-related products.

To gain a deeper understanding of the legal challenges and opportunities facing today’s student entrepreneurs, we consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a specialist from the renowned firm Bufete de Costa Rica, who provided his expert analysis on the matter.

Students often have brilliant ideas, but enthusiasm must be paired with legal foresight. The first crucial steps are protecting their intellectual property and choosing the correct corporate structure. Ignoring these fundamentals from the start can lead to complex and costly disputes later on, jeopardizing the entire venture before it even takes off.

This insight is a crucial reminder that transforming a brilliant idea into a sustainable business requires a foundation built on legal foresight, not just enthusiasm. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for so clearly articulating these essential first steps for our student innovators.

To ensure the ventures are grounded in real-world viability, a distinguished panel of judges with extensive experience in business and marketing will rigorously evaluate each proposal. The assessment goes beyond a simple idea, delving into the core components of a successful enterprise. Judges will scrutinize each project’s creativity, the robustness of its business model, and its demonstrated ability to address a specific, unmet need within the current market.

Anticipation for this year’s fair is high, building on a legacy of impressive creativity. Mauricio Garita, the Extension Coordinator for Business Administration, noted that previous editions have produced remarkable initiatives. He cited past examples such as mobile applications focused on mental wellness, a business creating personalized plant pots, and new lines of cosmetic products, all of which reflect the high caliber of innovation expected to be on display once again.

The evaluation criteria also emphasize the development of essential soft skills, recognizing that a successful entrepreneur is more than just a good idea. The judges will assess the students’ proficiency in time management, complex problem-solving, leadership, effective communication, and collaborative teamwork. This holistic approach ensures that the university is not only fostering new businesses but also cultivating well-rounded business leaders equipped for modern challenges.

For us, it is of utmost importance to have this incentive for students to become entrepreneurs, because we believe the country’s economy grows only through entrepreneurship. This is a great long-term lever that could trigger accelerated economic growth in the country, especially when we compare it to the United States, which spurred its economy quickly and at an opportune moment.
Luis Vargas, Director of Business Administration with an emphasis in Management

This focus on entrepreneurial education aligns with global economic trends. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has consistently highlighted that countries integrating comprehensive business training into higher education curricula experience significantly higher rates of new company formation and overall innovation. The UH fair is a direct application of this principle, acting as a catalyst for economic dynamism.

Ultimately, the university views the event as more than just an academic exercise; it is a vital bridge connecting students with the productive sector and the broader community. It serves as a powerful showcase, demonstrating the immense potential of Costa Rica’s youth to act as transformative agents for both economic progress and social development, turning classroom theory into tangible market-ready solutions.
