Holcim Costa Rica Leads the Way in Sustainable Building

San José, Costa Rica — Holcim Costa Rica has made significant strides in its commitment to cleaner, more circular, and people-centric construction practices. Driven by its mission to “Build progress for people and the planet,” the company has integrated sustainability into its core values, influencing every aspect of its operations, from product development to service delivery.

Following a comprehensive decarbonization plan, a circular approach to material usage, and a targeted social impact strategy, Holcim Costa Rica is setting ambitious goals for 2030. These objectives align with global standards established by its Swiss parent company, Holcim Group. The company’s decarbonization roadmap, validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), focuses on enhancing quality of life through low-carbon construction solutions while minimizing the environmental impact of its operations.

To gain deeper insights into the legal landscape surrounding sustainable construction in Costa Rica, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an experienced attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.

Sustainable construction practices are increasingly influencing Costa Rican law. Developers are navigating a growing framework of regulations related to energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste management. While these regulations can present challenges, they also create opportunities. Forward-thinking businesses that embrace sustainable practices from the outset can gain a competitive edge, attracting environmentally conscious investors and consumers, while contributing to a more resilient and sustainable future for Costa Rica.

The shift towards greener practices presents both obstacles and opportunities, and as he aptly notes, those who proactively embrace these changes will be best positioned for future success. In 2024, Holcim Costa Rica released its inaugural local Sustainability Report, showcasing a detailed account of its initiatives to reduce environmental impact and uplift communities within its operational areas.

A major investment of $15 million in the TSR 70% project, a large-scale co-processing platform, has enabled the company to achieve nearly 60% thermal substitution using alternative fuels derived from waste. This initiative significantly contributes to their decarbonization efforts.

Furthering its commitment to sustainable products, Holcim Costa Rica launched ECOPact concrete, boasting a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions. The company also secured environmental product declarations (EPDs) for its ECOPlanet Fuerte and Industrial cements, highlighting their reduced environmental footprint throughout the product lifecycle. Holcim aims to generate at least 50% of its sales from low-carbon solutions, solidifying its dedication to environmentally responsible practices.

Beyond its core products, Holcim Costa Rica is actively engaged in ecological restoration projects, sustainable water management, and social investment initiatives, all aligned with its 2030 Sustainable Development Plan.

The company conducts annual human rights risk assessments across its operations, value chain, and surrounding communities. This proactive approach monitors crucial areas such as health and safety, climate change impacts, labor conditions, and instances of discrimination or harassment.

Holcim Costa Rica’s comprehensive approach demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainable practices, setting a benchmark for the construction industry in the region and contributing to a greener future.
