Zavaleta Ignites 2026 Season with International Bronze Medal

San José, Costa RicaSAN FRANCISCO, CACosta Rican table tennis standout Lucía Zavaleta has launched her 2026 season with a significant international achievement, securing a bronze medal in the U19 mixed doubles category at the prestigious WTT Youth Contender San Francisco. The tournament, which ran from January 2-5 at the U.S. National Training Center, marked a powerful opening statement in what is poised to be a decisive year for the young athlete’s career.

Zavaleta’s journey to the podium is a remarkable story of adaptability and resilience. She was paired with Cheng Min-Hsiu of Chinese Taipei, forming a duo for the very first time at this high-stakes event. Their partnership was further tested by a significant communication barrier, as Cheng does not speak English. Despite these challenges, the pair demonstrated exceptional synergy and tactical prowess on the court, proving that skill and determination can transcend language.

The newly formed team began their campaign with a solid victory in the round of 16. They faced the Cambodian pair of Michelle Chen and Caillou Chen, dispatching them with a convincing 3-1 score. The set scores of 12-10, 11-5, 7-11, and 11-6 underscored their ability to control the pace of the match and recover from minor setbacks, quickly establishing themselves as a formidable contender in the draw.

Their momentum carried into the quarterfinals, where they confronted the American team of Isabella Luo and Alex Luo. In another display of cohesive play, Zavaleta and Cheng triumphed once again with a 3-1 victory. The closely fought sets of 11-5, 8-11, 11-9, and 11-9 highlighted their composure under pressure and secured their place on the podium, guaranteeing them at least a bronze medal for their efforts.

The semifinal round presented their toughest challenge yet, pitting them against the world’s number three ranked U19 pair, Bosman Botha of the United States and Mao Takamori of Japan. While the final score was a 0-3 loss for Zavaleta and Cheng, the match was far more competitive than the scoreline suggests. Each set was a nail-biter, ending with identical 9-11 scores, demonstrating that the Costa Rican-Chinese Taipei duo could compete at the very highest level of junior international table tennis.

This bronze medal performance is more than just a single result; it serves as a crucial building block in Zavaleta’s long-term strategy. Her performance in San Francisco showcases a high level of competitive maturity and a clear upward trajectory in her development. This success provides vital momentum as she continues to build her skills and international ranking on the demanding path toward the Los Angeles Olympic Games.

Zavaleta’s work in California is not yet complete. She will now shift her focus to the U19 individual competition, where she is slated to face Cambodia’s Michelle Chen and Japan’s Cocona Muramatsu in the group stage. This offers another valuable opportunity to gain experience and test her mettle against top-tier international talent.

Looking further ahead, the young athlete’s schedule remains packed. Her next major challenge will be the ITTF Pan American Cup, another significant event scheduled to take place in San Francisco from January 28 to February 1. This string of high-level competitions at the start of the year is designed to sharpen her skills and solidify her position as one of the region’s most promising players.
