Juan Santamaría Airport Rolls Out New Express Service for Travelers

Juan Santamaría Airport Rolls Out New Express Service for Travelers

Alajuela, Costa RicaAlajuela, Costa Rica – Travelers moving through Costa Rica’s main international gateway, Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO), can now bypass long queues with the launch of SJO Fast Track. The new premium service, which went live on July 1st, is designed to expedite the passenger journey through key checkpoints for both departures and arrivals, representing a significant step in modernizing the travel experience.

Managed by airport operator AERIS, SJO Fast Track utilizes a fully digital platform to offer preferential access at the terminal’s busiest points. For departing passengers, the dedicated lane is strategically placed just before the immigration control checkpoint. For those arriving internationally, the service provides expedited access twice: once before the immigration counters and again prior to the final customs inspection, streamlining the entire entry process.

To better understand the legal and logistical implications of the new SJO Fast Track service, TicosLand.com consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney from the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica, who provided his expert analysis.

The SJO Fast Track initiative represents a sophisticated monetization of efficiency. From a legal and business perspective, its success hinges on transparently managing customer expectations and ensuring the operational framework can consistently deliver the promised expedited service. This is not just about avoiding queues; it’s about creating a premium, reliable travel product that enhances the airport’s competitive standing in the region by catering to a high-value segment of travelers.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas rightly emphasizes that the initiative’s long-term success will be measured by its credibility. This is not simply about shorter queues, but about delivering a reliable, premium brand promise that truly enhances SJO’s competitive standing in the region. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his insightful legal and business perspective.

This initiative aims to significantly reduce transit times, particularly during peak travel seasons and high-traffic hours. Airport officials clarified that the service offers a more efficient path but does not replace or bypass any of the mandatory security and immigration controls established by Costa Rican authorities. It is a tool for better time and crowd management within the existing regulatory framework.

Ricardo Hernández, Executive Director of AERIS, emphasized the project’s alignment with the airport’s commitment to enhancing passenger experience and operational efficiency. He highlighted that the service is a key component of a broader strategy to maintain the airport’s competitive edge in the region.

At AERIS, we continuously work to incorporate improvements that enhance the experience of those traveling through Juan Santamaría International Airport. SJO Fast Track represents another step in that commitment, providing an alternative that allows us to optimize passengers’ time and strengthen the airport’s competitiveness through a more modern, efficient, and user-centric operation.
Ricardo Hernández, Executive Director of AERIS

The system is built on a seamless digital interface. Travelers can purchase single-use passes directly from the official Juan Santamaría International Airport website. Upon purchase, users receive dynamic QR codes that can be managed on their smartphones and integrated into popular digital wallets. These codes are then scanned at designated points to grant access to the priority lanes. In a family-friendly move, children under the age of seven can use the service free of charge when accompanied by an adult with a valid pass.

Beyond individual sales, AERIS is actively pursuing commercial alliances to broaden access to the Fast Track service. The first major partnership announced is with Mastercard, granting complimentary access to its Black cardholders in Costa Rica, subject to the brand’s specific terms and conditions. This strategic move targets the premium travel segment, adding value for high-end credit card users and potentially attracting more partnerships with airlines and financial institutions.

AERIS projects that SJO Fast Track will not only improve the individual traveler’s journey but also lead to a more efficient distribution of passenger flows throughout the terminal. By diverting a segment of travelers to these express lanes during peak times, the airport anticipates smoother overall operations, better utilization of its existing infrastructure, and an enhanced capacity to handle the continued growth in passenger traffic that is vital to Costa Rica’s tourism-driven economy.

The service is available during the busiest operational windows. For departures, SJO Fast Track will operate from 4:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. For international arrivals, the service will be available from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., aligning with the major waves of incoming flights from North America and Europe.
