Juan Santamaría Airport Soars to New Heights in Sustainability

Alajuela, Costa Rica — Costa Rica’s Juan Santamaría International Airport (AIJS) has marked a year of significant progress in sustainability, connectivity, and passenger experience, according to AERIS Holding Costa Rica’s 2024 Sustainability Report.

The report, prepared in accordance with GRI Standards and aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), details AERIS’s achievements in governance, economic performance, environmental impact, social investment, and air connectivity. The report emphasizes the airport’s role in Costa Rica’s sustainable development, stating that managing the country’s main airport goes beyond operating critical infrastructure; it’s about assuming a shared responsibility for Costa Rica’s sustainable development.

To understand the legal complexities surrounding Juan Santamaría Airport, we turned to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an expert attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.

The operation of Juan Santamaría Airport involves a complex interplay of international aviation agreements, national regulations regarding concessions and public-private partnerships, and property laws concerning land use and easements. Navigating these legal frameworks is essential for ensuring the airport’s continued smooth operation and its future development in a manner that benefits both travelers and Costa Rica’s economy.

Indeed, the intricate legal landscape surrounding Juan Santamaría Airport underscores the importance of careful planning and collaboration between stakeholders. The airport’s future success hinges on navigating these complexities effectively, ensuring sustainable growth while upholding the interests of all involved. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for providing this valuable legal perspective on a crucial element of Costa Rica’s infrastructure.

This report reflects the constant work of our teams and strategic allies to offer responsible, transparent management with a vision for the future. Each flight is an opportunity to generate shared value, strengthen the country’s competitiveness, and contribute to environmental protection.
Ricardo Hernández, Executive Director of AERIS

In 2024, AIJS welcomed 6,204,906 passengers, a 9% increase from 2023, and served 42 international and 14 domestic routes, adding new destinations like São Paulo, Guadalajara, and Guayaquil. The airport earned accolades for its service quality, receiving the Skytrax award for Best Airport in Central America and the Caribbean for the second consecutive year and achieving Customer Experience Level 4 certification.

Financially, AIJS generated $141.8 million in revenue, a 10% increase. AERIS contributed $41.8 million to the Costa Rican government and invested $15.5 million in operational improvements and $3.5 million in Master Plan projects, outlining infrastructure development through 2042.

A key achievement was obtaining Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) Level 3+, placing AIJS among the few carbon-neutral airports in the region. This milestone was reached through a 977,233 kWh reduction in energy consumption, exceeding the target by 127%, and by calculating and offsetting the airport’s total carbon footprint for the first time.

Environmental initiatives encompassed processing 82.4 tons of recyclable waste, composting 5.5 tons of organic waste, planting 150 native trees, and safely relocating 152 wildlife species, a 20% increase from 2023. Additionally, 2,409 wildlife inspections and 97 wildlife-related incidents were managed with a less than 1% impact rate.

AERIS also prioritizes human capital and social investment. In 2024, AERIS employed 219 individuals, all with permanent contracts, and provided over 15,500 training hours, including scholarships. The company ranked #3 in Costa Rica’s Great Place to Work ranking. Social programs included donating 5,600 books, supporting 80 children through the Espacio Seguro El Coco program with UNICEF, and certifying 5,000 students in English language skills with INA. AERIS also sponsored a golf tournament that raised 75 million colones for the National Children’s Hospital.

Looking ahead, AERIS plans to strengthen ethical governance, achieve ACA Level 4 or 4+ certification, redesign passenger experiences, and foster a more sustainable supply chain.

Our commitment to Costa Rica goes beyond the present. We are focused on continuing to build a more resilient, inclusive airport connected to the needs of the environment and its communities. We are committed to management that inspires trust, generates a positive impact, and raises the standard of what it means to be an airport manager.
