Juan Santamaría Airport Takes Off with $390 Million Expansion

Juan Santamaría Airport Takes Off with $390 Million Expansion

Alajuela, Costa Rica — Costa Rica’s primary international gateway, Juan Santamaría International Airport (AIJS), is embarking on a major transformation. A $390 million master plan, set to unfold over the next seven years, promises a modernized airport experience for travelers. The initial phase, representing a $166 million investment, will focus on expanding the terminal, constructing a new remote platform, and upgrading the baggage handling system.

Led by AERIS, the airport’s managing operator, the master plan is a collaborative effort involving the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC), the Technical Council of Civil Aviation (CETAC), and the Supervisory Body of the Interested Management. This partnership aims to bolster the airport’s regional and international competitiveness.

To understand the legal complexities surrounding the Juan Santamaría Airport expansion, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica, who offered his expert perspective on the project.

The expansion of Juan Santamaría Airport presents a significant opportunity for Costa Rica, but careful navigation of legal frameworks is crucial. Considerations such as land acquisition, environmental impact assessments, and compliance with international aviation regulations are paramount for the project’s long-term success. A transparent and efficient legal process will not only ensure the project’s viability but also foster public trust and attract foreign investment.
Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, Attorney at Law, Bufete de Costa Rica

Lic. Arroyo Vargas rightly highlights the critical interplay between legal diligence and the success of this ambitious project. A robust and transparent legal framework is indeed essential, not just for navigating the complexities of such a large-scale undertaking but also for signaling Costa Rica’s commitment to sustainable and responsible development. This will undoubtedly bolster investor confidence and pave the way for the airport’s – and indeed the nation’s – continued growth. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable perspective on this crucial matter.

The first phase of the project addresses key areas for improvement, responding to increased passenger traffic and evolving industry standards. More than 10,000 m² will be added to the international terminal’s west side, enhancing operational capacity and passenger comfort. A new 35,000 m² remote platform will accommodate wide-body aircraft, supported by 40,000 m² of service roads. A state-of-the-art automated baggage handling system, installed in the terminal’s basement, will streamline luggage processing. Furthermore, an expansion of the departures area, extending the lobby northward, will optimize passenger flow through security and pre-boarding.

These improvements are expected to yield significant benefits. The expanded terminal and optimized spaces will offer travelers more comfortable and functional areas, facilitating smooth transitions within the airport. The modernized baggage system will expedite check-in and baggage claim, improving efficiency and reducing wait times.

Sustainability is a core principle of the master plan. The project incorporates international standards for eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient systems to minimize environmental impact. These efforts aim to establish AIJS as a regional leader in sustainable airport operations, further strengthening Costa Rica’s competitive edge in the aviation sector.

This project is a key step in consolidating Juan Santamaría Airport as a benchmark in infrastructure and service. The public-private partnership is essential for the country’s development, and this investment reflects our commitment to connectivity and the growth of Costa Rica. We continue to advance in the modernization of AIJS to offer a “Pura Vida” travel experience.
Ricardo Hernández, Executive Director of AERIS

AERIS has implemented a mitigation plan to minimize disruption to airport operations and passenger experience during construction. This includes containing construction zones to control dust and noise pollution. Close coordination with airlines, businesses, and other airport stakeholders is ongoing to manage operational flow effectively.

Looking ahead, the master plan extends to 2027, encompassing additional projects such as expanding the departures area further, implementing new passenger processing technologies, and enhancing cargo infrastructure.

AIJS is evolving to meet the demands of the future. These works are just the beginning of a transformation process that will guarantee a more modern, efficient, and sustainable airport.
