Alajuela, Costa Rica — Julio Acosta García, a prominent figure in Costa Rican history, is remembered for his unwavering dedication to his country and his instrumental role in opposing the dictatorial rule of the Tinoco brothers. His life, marked by political upheaval and diplomatic endeavors, ultimately led him to the presidency, where he guided Costa Rica through a period of recovery and growth.

Born in San Ramón, Alajuela, on May 23, 1872, Acosta García embarked on a path of public service from an early age. He served as a deputy for Alajuela from 1902 to 1906, later holding diplomatic positions in El Salvador. His career trajectory was significantly impacted by the coup d’état led by Federico Tinoco Granados against President Alfredo González Flores. Forced into exile in El Salvador, Acosta García became a leading voice against the Tinoco regime.

This victory catapulted Acosta García into national prominence, and he returned to San José to a hero’s welcome. Riding this wave of popular support, he successfully ran for president, serving from 1920 to 1924.

He also navigated a border conflict with Panama and secured a legal victory against Great Britain in the Taft Laudo (Tinoco Case) in 1923.

Even after his presidency, Acosta García remained active in public service, holding positions such as Second Vice President, deputy for San José, and Secretary of Foreign Affairs. In this latter role, he played a key role in Costa Rica joining the United Nations in 1945.
