KLM Cements Year-Round Amsterdam Connection to Costa Rica for 2026

Alajuela, Costa RicaALAJUELA – In a significant move signaling strong confidence in Costa Rica’s tourism market, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has confirmed it will extend its route between Amsterdam and San José to a year-round service throughout 2026. The strategic expansion will add approximately 22,000 additional seats annually, solidifying a vital air bridge between Central America and one of Europe’s most important travel hubs.

The decision was finalized following a high-level meeting at the World Travel Market (WTM) trade fair in London. Representatives from the KLM – Air France group, Emile Arnst and Valérie Alexanian, met with Costa Rican Minister of Tourism, William Rodríguez, and Hermes Navarro, the head of Investment Attraction for the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT). This agreement formalizes the airline’s commitment to the destination beyond the traditional high season.

To better understand the legal framework and consumer rights involved with international carriers operating in the region, TicosLand.com consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an expert attorney from the law firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

Travelers flying on KLM, as a European Union-based airline, are often protected by some of the world’s strongest passenger rights regulations, namely EU 261. This means that for significant delays, cancellations, or denied boarding on flights originating in the EU or even on flights to the EU, Costa Rican passengers may be entitled to financial compensation and mandatory assistance. It is a critical piece of international law that empowers the consumer far beyond typical airline policies.

This insight underscores a critical layer of protection that many passengers may overlook, effectively turning a potential travel disruption into an instance of clear, enforceable rights. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable perspective on how these powerful international regulations empower the Costa Rican traveler.

Previously, the service operated primarily during Europe’s winter months. The new arrangement extends the five-times-weekly flights to cover the April to October period, ensuring consistent connectivity for the entire calendar year. This development is expected to significantly boost visitor arrivals from the Netherlands and facilitate easier travel for tourists from across the European continent.

By expanding operations, it will contribute to strengthening air connectivity between Costa Rica and Europe
William Rodríguez, Minister of Tourism

Minister Rodríguez emphasized the strategic importance of the deal, viewing it as a critical component in the nation’s strategy to enhance and diversify its international tourism base. The move not only caters to the growing demand but also provides stability and predictability for both the tourism sector and potential travelers planning their trips well in advance.

The flights will continue to operate between Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) and Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport (AMS) on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. Operations will utilize a modern Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. According to preliminary schedules, the flight is estimated to arrive in Costa Rica at 5:10 p.m. and depart for the Netherlands at 8:35 p.m., convenient times for both leisure and business travelers.

The Netherlands already represents a key market for Costa Rica, currently ranking as the fifth-largest source of European tourists. According to the latest data from the ICT, Costa Rica welcomed 24,269 visitors from the Netherlands between January and September of this year. During the same period, total air arrivals from Europe reached 309,710, underscoring the continent’s crucial role in the nation’s tourism economy.

This announcement from KLM is further amplified by a parallel capacity increase from its partner airline, Air France. The French carrier will boost its service to twice-daily flights on Mondays and Saturdays during two peak periods: from December 15, 2025, to January 11, 2026, and again from February 9 to March 15, 2026. This combined effort will mark the first time a European airline group operates nine weekly flights to Costa Rica, a powerful testament to the Air France-KLM group’s bullish outlook on the destination.

The sustained presence of KLM throughout the year provides more than just a direct link to the Netherlands; it unlocks Schiphol’s extensive network. As a major global hub, AMS offers seamless connections to countless destinations in Germany, Scandinavia, the United Kingdom, and Eastern Europe, positioning Costa Rica as a more accessible destination for a broader European audience seeking its world-renowned natural attractions.
