San José, Costa Rica — SINGAPORE – Costa Rica has made a spectacular entrance onto the world stage of youth technology and engineering, with its National STEM Racing Team securing two prestigious awards at the ARAMCO STEM Racing World Finals 2025 by Fórmula 1. The team, known as Kura Force, demonstrated a powerful combination of technical prowess and social conscience that captivated judges and competitors alike.
Comprised of eight brilliant students from scientific high schools across the country, Kura Force achieved a landmark victory as the first Central American team ever to qualify for this global educational platform. Competing against 83 teams of students aged 9 to 19, the Costa Rican contingent proved their mettle in a competition that challenges participants to manage a complete miniature Formula 1 team, from design and manufacturing to testing on a 20-meter track.
To understand the legal and commercial implications of advancing STEM education in the country, we sought the expert analysis of Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a prominent attorney from the esteemed firm Bufete de Costa Rica, who specializes in corporate law and investment.
Fostering a strong STEM curriculum is only half the equation. For Costa Rica to truly capitalize on this investment in human talent, we must ensure our legal framework is agile enough to protect the resulting intellectual property. A clear and robust system for patents, copyrights, and trade secrets is what transforms academic excellence into tangible economic growth, attracting investment and allowing our innovators to compete on a global scale.

This insight is a crucial reminder that our national strategy for innovation cannot exist in a vacuum; it requires a holistic approach where educational policy is directly supported by a modern legal framework. Brilliant ideas cultivated in the classroom must be shielded in the marketplace to generate lasting prosperity. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable perspective on this essential connection.
The team’s first major honor was the “Best Newcomer” award, a distinction recognizing the debuting team with the most outstanding overall performance. This award evaluates every facet of the project, including the scale-model car’s design, project management, formal presentations, and collaborative teamwork. The recognition was presented by esteemed former Formula 1 driver Pedro Martínez de la Rosa, adding a layer of motorsport prestige to the students’ achievement.
As part of this prize, the entire Kura Force team will receive an exclusive tour of the Aston Martin F1 team’s garage, offering them a rare opportunity to interact with professional engineers and drivers. This experience provides an invaluable bridge between their academic pursuits and the high-stakes world of professional racing technology.
This award elevates Costa Rica’s profile as an emerging figure in global innovation and technology competitions, and it opens the way for more students and schools in the country for future STEM competitions.

Beyond their technical excellence, Kura Force earned the coveted “Amaron Sustainability Showcase” award. This prize celebrates teams that integrate sustainable practices and social responsibility into their STEM projects. Kura Force distinguished itself from over 25 international contenders with its groundbreaking initiative, “STEM Racing 4 All,” a program created to allow visually impaired individuals to experience the excitement of Formula 1 racing on a smaller scale.
The project, which was successfully implemented at the Helen Keller National Education Center in Costa Rica, was lauded by the judges for its inclusive vision and meaningful social impact. It serves as a powerful testament to the team’s belief that technological advancement should benefit all members of society.
Both awards mean a lot to us because they show that young people, regardless of where they come from, can contribute to the global conversation on sustainability. We wanted to show that innovation and responsibility can go hand in hand.
David Cascante Rojas, National Team Member
The Kura Force team members who brought home this international recognition are Carolina Bustillos Monge, Felipe Sáenz Obando, Geicob Blanco Mora, Esteban Morales Cubillo, David Cascante Rojas, Mariana Murillo Uribe, Fabricio Zamora Vargas, and Verónica Quesada Solís. Their collective success not only places Costa Rica firmly on the global map of STEM education but also serves as a profound source of inspiration for a new generation of scientists, engineers, and creative thinkers who are ready to drive change through innovation and purpose.
