Digital Mudslinging Defines Costa Rican Election as Underdog Finds Positive Niche

San José, Costa RicaSAN JOSÉ – With only 17 days remaining until Costa Ricans head to the polls, the digital battlefield has become a landscape of intense scrutiny and overwhelming negativity. A new analysis reveals that while a few front-runners dominate the highly critical online conversation, one candidate is unexpectedly carving out a space defined by positive sentiment, challenging the prevailing narrative of polarization.

The latest report from the Digital Communication Observatory at the Universidad Latina de Costa Rica (ULATINA), covering the period from December 1, 2025, to January 12, 2026, paints a stark picture of the online electoral environment. The study confirms that the digital pulse of the campaign is concentrated around a handful of candidates, with front-runner Laura Fernández continuing to lead the volume of discussion, despite a significant drop in mentions.

To provide a legal perspective on the electoral process and its implications for the country’s stability, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney from the firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

The strength of Costa Rica’s democracy is anchored in the legal authority of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE). Its role as an independent fourth power of the Republic ensures not only the integrity of the vote but also a predictable and orderly transition of government. This constitutional certainty is a cornerstone of our legal framework, providing the stability that both citizens and international investors rely upon, regardless of the election’s outcome.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas’s insight powerfully underscores that the nation’s celebrated stability is not a matter of chance, but a direct result of the robust legal architecture centered on the TSE. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable perspective on this cornerstone of Costa Rican democracy.

Fernández accumulated 113,722 references across social media, blogs, and public websites during the analysis period. However, this figure represents a 34% contraction from the previous month. Researchers at ULATINA attribute this decline not to waning interest but to a calculated reduction in media exposure during December, a month with fewer major debates and campaign events. Nevertheless, her decision to limit her participation to four specific debates and a controversial appearance at a Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) event fueled spikes in online chatter, generating criticism, memes, and viral content.

Despite the lower volume, the narrative surrounding Fernández remains intensely critical. The report found that a majority, 56.8%, of mentions associated with her name were negative, compared to just 22.5% positive. This keeps her firmly positioned as the primary focus of both support and attack within the digital ecosystem.

Trailing in second place for overall mentions is Claudia Dobles, with 94,898 references. Although her volume saw a more modest decrease of 9%, Dobles stands out for having the most proportionally negative sentiment. A staggering 78% of all online comments related to her candidacy are critical, cementing her digital persona as one defined by confrontation and amplified by platform algorithms that favor polarizing content.

Meanwhile, other candidates like Álvaro Ramos and Ariel Robles have successfully regained visibility, registering 92,106 and 73,194 mentions, respectively. Ramos has managed a more balanced profile of criticism and support, while Robles continues to attract a majority of negative feedback even as his digital footprint grows. In contrast, the campaigns of Fabricio Alvarado and Juan Carlos Hidalgo appear to be losing their grip on the online conversation.

This contentious environment contributes to what the ULATINA report itself calls a state of “high negativization,” where eight out of every ten online comments about presidential candidates are critical. Yet, amid this torrent of negativity, José Aguilar Berrocal has emerged as a remarkable outlier. He is the only candidate whose digital sentiment is more positive than negative, with 41.9% of his 10,821 mentions being favorable versus 32.8% unfavorable, the lowest rejection rate among all digitally relevant candidates.

The report pinpoints Aguilar’s successful performance during a presentation at the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, an event that drew nearly 30,000 live connections, as the key driver of his positive momentum. In a political arena dominated by hyper-concentrated attacks, his campaign has effectively navigated the digital space to build a favorable narrative, demonstrating that an alternative to the prevailing polarization may still resonate with the electorate.
