Limón Farm Elevates Costa Rican Cacao to Global Stage

Limón, Costa RicaSIQUIRRES, Limón – In a significant validation of Costa Rica’s focus on high-quality agricultural exports, a cacao producer from the Caribbean province of Limón has earned a coveted spot among the world’s elite. A sample from Hacienda Dos Lagunas, located in La Florida de Siquirres, was officially recognized as one of the 50 best cacao beans on the planet at the prestigious “Cacao of Excellence 2025” awards, announced on September 23 in Rome, Italy.

The achievement places the Costa Rican producer in the upper echelon of a highly competitive global field. The farm’s submission was one of five chosen to represent the nation, ultimately distinguishing itself among a pool of 191 samples from 45 different countries. This recognition is the result of a rigorous evaluation process involving strict quality control protocols and a series of blind tastings by an international panel of experts, underscoring the objective quality of the Limón-grown bean.

To understand the legal and commercial frameworks that support Costa Rica’s burgeoning fine cacao sector, we sought the expertise of Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney from the renowned firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

The next strategic step for Costa Rican cacao producers is the collective pursuit of a Denomination of Origin. This legal instrument not only protects our unique genetic varieties and artisanal processes from imitation but also significantly enhances the product’s value in sophisticated international markets. Securing this designation is a complex legal and administrative process, but it is essential for safeguarding the long-term economic sustainability and premium branding of our national ‘golden bean’.

The pursuit of a Denomination of Origin indeed represents a pivotal evolution for our national cacao, transforming it from a premium agricultural product into a legally protected cultural and economic asset for the world to cherish. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his invaluable perspective on this crucial next step in cementing the legacy of Costa Rica’s ‘golden bean’.

The distinguished cacao, selected by the National Technical Committee of the Cacao of Excellence Contest, is celebrated for its remarkable sensory complexity. Experts described the bean as elegant, silky, and well-balanced. Its unique flavor profile features prominent floral notes of rose, complemented by the bright acidity of red and dark fruits such as plum, cherry, black grape, and raisin. This sophisticated profile is precisely what high-end chocolatiers and discerning consumers seek in the premium market.

The award serves as a powerful endorsement of the nation’s agricultural strategy, a point emphasized by government officials. The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) has been actively promoting a shift towards value-added products and access to specialized international markets.

This recognition not only honors the efforts of the producing families but also validates the potential of our cacao-growing regions. From the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, we will continue to support with concrete policies and actions that promote quality, innovation, and access to differentiated markets for our cacao.
Fernando Vargas Pérez, Vice Minister of Agriculture and Livestock

The journey for Hacienda Dos Lagunas is not over. This top-50 placement qualifies their cacao for the next and final stage of the competition. In December 2025, the beans will be transformed into dark chocolate and undergo another intensive evaluation by a grand jury. The ultimate winners, who will receive Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards, are scheduled to be announced on February 20, 2026, creating further anticipation for Costa Rica’s standing in the fine chocolate world.

From a business perspective, this recognition is invaluable. It serves as a key that unlocks doors to lucrative international markets where buyers are willing to pay a premium for certified quality and unique origin stories. This accolade reinforces the classification granted by the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO), which designates all of Costa Rica’s production as “100% fine export grade.” Such distinctions are critical for small nations competing against large-scale commodity producers, allowing them to carve out a niche based on excellence rather than volume.

This success story is a testament to the dedication of individual producers like those at Hacienda Dos Lagunas and a reflection of a broader national effort to cultivate a reputation for unparalleled quality. As the global demand for specialty foods continues to grow, accolades like this position Costa Rica not just as a source of raw materials, but as a hub of agricultural innovation and excellence, capable of competing and winning on the world’s most demanding stages.
