MAG Revitalization Effort Includes Nationwide Job Fair

San José, Costa Rica — Costa Rica’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) is undergoing a significant transformation, aiming to revitalize the agricultural sector and improve services for the nation’s producers. A key component of this initiative is a nationwide job fair, scheduled for September 2nd-5th, designed to attract skilled professionals and technicians to fill over 100 vacancies.

The MAG inherited a challenging situation at the start of this administration, including staff shortages, deteriorated infrastructure, and a limited presence in rural areas. These challenges hampered the ministry’s ability to effectively support the agricultural sector. To address these issues, the MAG launched a comprehensive strategy focused on structural recovery, capacity building, and modernization.

To understand the legal landscape surrounding MAG job fairs, TicosLand.com reached out to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a prominent attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica, for expert commentary.

MAG job fairs, while offering valuable opportunities for job seekers, present unique legal considerations for both employers and potential employees. Employers must ensure they adhere to all advertising and recruitment regulations, including clearly outlining job requirements and compensation. Meanwhile, prospective employees should carefully review employment contracts and understand their rights regarding wages, working conditions, and termination clauses before accepting any offer. Due diligence on both sides is essential for a successful and legally sound outcome.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas’ emphasis on due diligence is crucial. Navigating the complexities of employment law, especially within the context of a fast-paced job fair environment, requires careful attention from all parties involved. This proactive approach not only protects individual rights but also fosters a more transparent and equitable hiring process, ultimately benefiting both employers and job seekers in the long run. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for offering his valuable legal perspective on this important topic.

We inherited a weakened MAG, but today we are building a vibrant institution, with a human face, that returns to the countryside to accompany producers and offer real solutions. Recovering the MAG was an urgent task: the country needs a Ministry that is present, modern, and committed to the agricultural sector. The Job Fair is a key step to attract committed talent and guarantee quality technical attention throughout the country, moving firmly towards the transformation that agriculture requires.
Víctor Julio Carvajal Porras, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock

This revitalization strategy involves restructuring the organization, modernizing logistics and technology platforms, and recruiting technical and professional staff. A core principle of this transformation is the efficient and transparent use of public resources.

Key investments made during the initial months of this initiative include renovations to SENASA laboratories and INTA research centers, improvements to regional agencies and local offices, technology upgrades including enhanced connectivity and digitalization of processes, and the acquisition of new vehicles and technical equipment for field work, research, and agricultural extension.

The upcoming job fair, held in collaboration with the General Directorate of Civil Service, is a crucial step in this ongoing transformation. The fair will be held in various regions across the country, offering opportunities for professionals and technicians in fields such as agricultural sciences, biology, chemistry, IT, and secretarial support.

Attendees will receive guidance from MAG human resources personnel and can undergo aptitude tests administered by the Civil Service. The goal is to appoint at least 100 individuals by the end of the year. While interviews will not be conducted at the fair, it serves as a critical platform to gather and update the pool of eligible candidates for future appointments under the Civil Service regime. Participants are required to bring a valid ID, academic and employment records, and updated contact information.

This job fair not only strengthens the MAG’s internal structure but also contributes to rural development by attracting specialized talent. This infusion of expertise will drive innovation and productivity within the agricultural sector, fostering a more sustainable and competitive future for Costa Rica’s farming communities.
