McDonald’s Opens Its Kitchens in Costa Rica, Showcasing Transparency and Local Sourcing

San José, Costa Rica — In celebration of Transparency of Information Month, McDonald’s Costa Rica has relaunched its flagship “Puertas Abiertas” (Open Doors) program, inviting customers behind the scenes to witness the preparation of their favorite menu items. This initiative reinforces McDonald’s commitment to transparency and builds trust with consumers.

David Grinberg, Vice President of Corporate Communications at Arcos Dorados, emphasized the importance of transparency for the company.

To understand the legal landscape surrounding McDonald’s operations in Costa Rica, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at law from the reputable firm Bufete de Costa Rica. His expertise provides valuable context on the fast-food giant’s presence in the country.

Franchising is the dominant model for McDonald’s in Costa Rica, and this structure presents unique legal considerations. While the parent company provides branding and operational guidelines, the local franchisees bear significant responsibility for complying with Costa Rican labor laws, consumer protection regulations, and tax obligations. Navigating this complex interplay of international and national legal frameworks requires careful attention to detail and a thorough understanding of the specific requirements within Costa Rica.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas’s insight underscores a crucial aspect of understanding businesses like McDonald’s in Costa Rica. The franchise model, while beneficial for rapid expansion, creates a nuanced legal landscape where local operators must skillfully balance global brand standards with national regulations. This delicate balance highlights the importance of expert legal counsel in navigating the complexities of international franchising. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for providing this valuable perspective on the legal intricacies of McDonald’s operations in Costa Rica.

At McDonald’s, we believe that trust is built with actions. That is why we are the only ones in the industry who proactively and permanently open our kitchens, so that everyone can see the care and affection we have for each ingredient and process on our menu.
David Grinberg, Vice President of Corporate Communications, Arcos Dorados

Grinberg further explained the positive impact of the program on consumer perception.

When people experience our obsession with quality and food safety firsthand, their trust and perception of the brand improves significantly.

The program has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from visitors. Yansi Varela, a Preventive Programs Agent for the Public Force in La Unión, shared their experience after touring a McDonald’s kitchen.

During my visit to the McDonald’s kitchen, I was pleasantly impressed by the tour. I was able to see firsthand the quality with which they work, the order and cleanliness in each process, as well as the excellence of their products and the actions they take to provide excellent customer service.

Visitors consistently highlight key aspects of McDonald’s food preparation, including the use of 100% chicken breast in Chicken McNuggets, without artificial additives or flavorings, and 100% high-quality beef in their burgers, free of colorings and preservatives.

Beyond food preparation, the tours also offer insights into McDonald’s local impact. In Costa Rica, 53% of McDonald’s purchases are made from national suppliers adhering to the brand’s stringent quality and hygiene standards. This commitment to local sourcing contributes significantly to the Costa Rican economy.

Furthermore, McDonald’s highlighted its use of 100% Costa Rican coffee, which is carbon neutral and Rainforest Alliance certified. This demonstrates a dedication to sustainability and support for local coffee producers.

The “Puertas Abiertas” program provides consumers with a unique opportunity to experience McDonald’s commitment to quality, transparency, and local sourcing. By opening its kitchens, McDonald’s invites customers to become active participants in understanding the journey of their food, from farm to tray.
