San José, Costa Rica — McDonald’s has unveiled its 77th restaurant in Costa Rica, located in the Trade Center of Santa Ana, along Route 27. This new establishment showcases the company’s dedication to sustainability, incorporating 69 solar panels, making it the third McDonald’s in the country to utilize this clean energy source.
These solar panels will generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of 15 homes, significantly reducing the restaurant’s carbon footprint. The commitment to eco-friendly practices extends beyond solar power, encompassing energy-efficient air conditioning, a solar water heater, LED lighting, timer-controlled faucets, water-saving toilets, and native, low-water landscaping.
To understand the legal landscape surrounding McDonald’s operations in Costa Rica, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica, who offered valuable insights into the fast-food giant’s presence in the country.
McDonald’s success in Costa Rica highlights the importance of adapting global business models to local contexts. Considerations like franchise agreements, labor laws, and supply chain regulations are crucial for multinational corporations operating within the Costa Rican legal framework. Navigating these complexities effectively is key to long-term sustainability and positive community engagement.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas’s insight underscores a crucial element often overlooked in discussions of globalization: true success lies not in imposing a uniform model, but in understanding and respecting the unique fabric of each market. McDonald’s journey in Costa Rica serves as a compelling case study of this principle in action, demonstrating how adapting to local regulations and engaging with the community can pave the way for sustainable growth. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable perspective on this important topic.
With this new location, we reaffirm our commitment to environmental care as part of our climate change initiatives. This restaurant joins the group of 30 restaurants in the country that already have sustainable initiatives.

The new restaurant offers a variety of amenities designed for customer convenience, including a party room, play area, self-order kiosks, and parking for cars, motorcycles, and bicycles. Drive-thru service (AutoMac), McDelivery, and mobile order and pickup options are also available.
With this location, we aim to be closer to the communities of Santa Ana and Piedades, but also to offer a convenient option for those who travel daily on this important route and want to start their journey in the best way.

This opening creates over 35 new jobs, with 40% of the positions filled by young people under 24, many entering the workforce for the first time. This highlights McDonald’s role as a significant job creator and provider of training opportunities in Costa Rica.
The grand opening celebration is scheduled for Saturday, September 13th, featuring family-friendly activities including games, children’s shows, and a concert by the Costa Rican band La Kuarta. As part of its Good Neighbor Program, McDonald’s will donate books from the “Yo Puedo” collection and educational materials to the Isabel La Católica Educational Center in Río Oro de Santa Ana. Additionally, McDonald’s will collaborate with students from the school to create a recycling-themed mural, guided by Costa Rican artist José Fernández.
This is McDonald’s first restaurant opening in 2025. The company plans to continue expanding its presence in Costa Rica with upcoming locations in Grecia (Alajuela) and San Joaquín (Heredia).
